Saints Nation: Titans Embarrass Saints 32-9 to Mercifully End Preseason

Well that was completely unwatchable. I’m not going to spend too much time analyzing what I just watched because clearly Sean Payton had no interest in playing any meaningful player in this game and the 3rd and 4th string players on the Saints had no interest in making plays. If the coaching staff and players aren’t trying, then I’m not going to try too hard either. Here are my bullets on this dreadful 32-9 beatdown:

Offensive Player of the Game: Joique Bell

Defensive Player of the Game: Junior Galette

Special Teams Player of the Game: Thomas Morstead

  • Sean Canfield wasn’t very good, but he was victimized by atrocious play around him. Both interceptions he threw hit receivers right in the hands, bounced off, and floated into a Titans’ hands. Not his fault.
  • On a positive note, Joique Bell looked absolutely great once again.
  • Patrick Cobbs was horrible.
  • Tory Humphrey was horrible.
  • Brian de la Puente and Matt Tennant both had major mistakes and didn’t play well.
  • I actually have no idea what the Saints are going to do at #3 and #4 tight end. Normally they keep 4, but they might just keep three this year. Humphrey (the #3) was so bad I can’t see how they even justify keeping him. Maybe someone decent comes up on the waiver wire? I will say undrafted rookie Michael Higgins made some plays and looked promising, but he looks real light in the pads for a tight end.
  • The defense played ok, especially early. They kept things reasonable when the offense was making every effort to self destruct the team. Most notable was the oustanding play of MLB Jo-Lonn Dunbar and DE Junior Galette. Galette was good against the run surprisingly, and had nice edge pressure all game.
  • Trumaine McBride made a nice last ditch effort at making the team. He looked pretty good at corner.
  • Special teams could not have been worse. The return game was bad and had penalties. The coverage units gave up huge returns, including a punt for a touchdown and a kickoff past the 50. I gave Thomas Morstead player of the game on ST because he saved a touchdown on that kickoff.
  • The story of the game was kicker John Kasay. If Hartley is truly going to miss some time, the Saints are in big big trouble. Kasay missed a 39 yarder before halftime and the extra point following the Saints’ lone touchdown. Can’t get anymore horrible than that. He did make a 38 yarder at the end of the game, but I think he needs to be released immediately. Clearly his allegiances are still with the Panthers.
  • Adrian Arrington was up and down. I don’t think he makes the final cut but we shall see.
  • The Saints had a whooping 5 turnovers.

That’s all I’m interested in writing about this game. It was beyond miserable. This was clear evidence why there shouldn’t be a 4th preseason game. Just don’t sweat it too much, the real football starts next week and this stupid result has no bearing on it. Have a good night!
