Ohio State

The Buckeyes were once again led by Junior All-American Kelsey Mitchell with 31 points on 7 of 13 shooting from beyond the arc. The rest of the team struggled from downtown and was 0-11 until a Sierra Calhoun trey late in the game. Stephanie Mavunga, Tori McCoy, Shayla Cooper and guard freshman Kiara Lewis all joined Mitchell in double figures with 12 points apiece. The Buckeyes destroyed the Vikings inside by out-rebounding them 51-32 and outscoring them in the paint 60-42.

Coach Kevin McGuff

”They’re not very big so the emphasis was to get the ball around the basket with Steph and Tori, especially, we wanted to take advantage of that.”

Cleveland State

Cleveland State tied a Value City Arena record for 3-pointers made by an opponent with 14, super sophomore Ashanti Abshaw kept up with Mitchell for the most part with 25 points fueled by 5-10 from beyond the arc. Despite the loss, the Vikings had four in double figures themselves. Along with Abshaw, Olivia Voskuhl had 10, Nicolete Newman had 13 and Khayla Livingston had 14.

Coach Kate Peterson Abiad

”I was trying to minimize possessions because we knew they could score a lot of points in a hurry, I was not happy with our quick shots early on. We talked about that at halftime and I think we settled into our offense in the third quarter.

That’s the best transition team I’ve seen in years,”
