The Green Bay Packers have been one of 2016’s bigger disappointments, yet it doesn’t sound like the blame will fall on head coach Mike McCarthy.
McCarthy receives the wealth of the blame for Green Bay’s problems, yet according to CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora, other areas will get addressed before the coach comes under fire:
Packers coach Mike McCarthy has been under fire in Green Bay for his team’s struggles, but team and league sources anticipate any pending offseason changes to occur elsewhere in the organization.
Specifically, La Canfora suggests the organization will focus more on who acquires the talent as opposed to what McCarthy does with it:
Internally, there are concerns about the output from recent drafts and numerous position groups that are not as strong as they once were, so long-time general manager Ted Thompson is not immune to review. How long Thompson, 63, wants to continue doing this job already was the source of conjecture, and should the team not pull out of its tailspin, some team sources believe the club’s board of directors could oversee front-office changes.
This likely won’t silence the McCarthy critics, nor those of quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Despite the return of players such as Jordy Nelson, the offense simply hasn’t lived up to expectations.
The Packers rode a three-game skid into Week 11 with the season very much in question. The organization usually falls into the conservative category when it comes to coaching changes for underachieving seasons.
For now, at least, McCarthy seems safe and will get a shot to turn the ship around while someone new might handle the talent-acquisition process.
