Rex Ryan hopes Sammy Watkins returns Sunday

New York Jets v Buffalo Bills

Rex Ryan says there’s a chance Sammy Watkins could play Sunday against the Jaguars in Buffalo.

Since Ryan is the King of Bold Statements, that means the Bills can hope that Watkins returns from his foot injury but not count on it.

“I’m speaking on behalf of every Buffalo Bills fan: I hope he can play some,” Ryan said via ESPN.com.

Not even Ryan is expecting Watkins to return to full-time action Sunday. Watkins was placed on the injured reserve designated to return list with a foot injury and is eligible to come back Sunday. He’s played in two games this season and has six catches. He caught 60 balls, nine for touchdowns, last year.

Robert Woods has become the Bills’ leading receiver with Watkins out. He has 42 catches but is averaging just 11.7 yards per reception and has one touchdown. He also has a sprained knee and his chances of playing Sunday aren’t any better than Watkins’. Not only that, but LeSean McCoy’s dislocated thumb will be monitored all week.

With or without Watkins, a lot is going to fall on Tyrod Taylor’s shoulders if the Bills (5-5) are going to avoid an upset that would cripple their playoff hopes.
