Packers say Eddie Lacy, Sam Shields will remain on injured reserve

The 2016 season is over for Green Bay Packers running back Eddie Lacy and cornerback Sam Shields.

Head coach Mike McCarthy confirmed on Wednesday that both Lacy (ankle) and Shields (concussion) will remain on injured reserve for the remainder of the season.

It’s possible both Lacy and Shields will never play in Green Bay again.

Lacy, a second-round pick in 2012, is an unrestricted free agent after this season. The Packers will likely entertain bringing him back on a short-term deal, but his production took a sharp turn after two strong seasons to start his NFL career.

Shields may never play in the NFL again. He still hasn’t recovered from a concussion suffered back in Week 1. Considering Shields’ extensive history of head injuries, it’s possible his career is in major jeopardy.

The Packers have sorely missed both players.

A run game powered by Lacy has flatlined with him on the sidelines, while the Packers defense has been scorched in recent weeks—largely thanks to depth issues at cornerback.

Over five games, Lacy rushed for 360 yards and caught four passes. Shields, a Pro Bowler in 2014, made three tackles against Jacksonville before exiting the Packers’ Week 1 win.
