Browns want to start Robert Griffin III again before season ends

Dallas Cowboys v Cleveland Browns

The Cleveland Browns want Robert Griffin III back on the field before the disastrous 2016 season ends.

While the Browns don’t necessarily believe RG3 will help the team avoid a fateful 0-16 record, the folks in charge believe he could give the team a better idea as to where the roster stands on the rebuilding path.

NFL.com’s Conor Orr captured the situation:

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport noted on NFL GameDay Morning Sunday that unless rookie quarterback Cody Kessler returns from a concussion and gets on a roll, the team will try and start Griffin at least one more time in 2016.

RG3 appeared in one game with the Browns this year, throwing for 190 yards and an interception before leaving with a shoulder injury that placed him on injured reserve. He practiced with the team before Thanksgiving and is eligible to return.

It’s hard to think RG3 boosts the struggling supporting cast around him much. But if he can show well, the team might move forward with building the team around him next offseason rather than once again addressing the quarterback position in some fashion.

Either way, Cleveland trots out veteran Josh McCown in Week 12. If rookie Cody Kessler isn’t healthy, it will make it all the easier for the Browns to shut him down and get RG3 back in the lineup.

Griffin has one year left on his deal with plenty to prove, so odds are strong he’s hoping to return this year.
