Falcons put star CB Desmond Trufant on IR

Carolina Panthers v Atlanta Falcons

The NFC South-leading Atlanta Falcons will be without their star defensive back for the rest of the 2016 season.

According to the team’s official site, the Falcons placed cornerback Desmond Trufant on season-ending injured reserve after learning he needs surgery to repair a torn pectoral muscle.

Trufant missed his second straight game during Sunday’s win over the Arizona Cardinals. The Falcons’ first-round pick in 2013 originally suffered the injury during Week 9. While he tried to play through the injury, the Falcons have decided to pull the plug on Trufant’s 2016 season.

Over nine games, Trufant recorded 31 tackles, two sacks and one interception.

The Falcons will now have to power through the rest of the season without their best cover cornerback. Fortunately for Atlanta, the Falcons don’t face a great passing team until the season finale, when Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints travel to the Georgia Dome.

The Falcons already rank dead last in the NFL in passing yards allowed per game.

Trufant, 26, earned a trip to the Pro Bowl in 2015. He will enter the final year of his rookie deal in 2017.
