It’s Thursday, and the weekend is almost here. Checking the sports schedule, the fall and winter sports are quickly approaching. On the FCS football front, we’re a week away from University of North Dakota football opener against the University of Utah Utes. There are roughly 42 days until the UND hockey teams begins its pursuit of their ninth NCAA title.

Speaking of college football, Fighting Hawks safety Cole Reyes is getting a lot of attention.

UND Football Ticket Information

Per UND football release: Fan excitement for the program is at a fever pitch with over 1,000 new season tickets sold since the end of last season. After a historic season in 2016 that featured the program’s first appearance in the FCS playoffs, fans can still pledge their loyalty to the Fighting Hawks by purchasing season tickets to see the defending Big Sky Conference Champions. Fans looking for the best value are still encouraged to purchase season tickets starting at $80 per seat. Fans can reserve their seats for the 2017 season by contacting the Ralph Engelstad Arena Box Office at 701-777-4689 or through online purchase.

Hockey! Hockey! Hockey! Oy! Oy! Oy!

This week, I took a look at the University of Illinois; and there’s a very real possibility that the Illini could be the next school to add Men’s Division I college hockey. The discussion is now shifted to where a potential hockey arena could be built. From the News Gazette: Developer has a different idea for proposed indoor UI sports arena.

I was approached by Rotoden to write for their blog. I’ll be writing about two-10 articles per month. I will be writing about the Boston Bruins, Minnesota Wild and possibly about the Winnipeg Jets. They plan to eventually cover college hockey, too.

The Neutral Zone has ranked the incoming freshman classes and UND is ranked number one. Obviously, this means little, when the puck drops, but it shows how highly regarded that UND’s 2017-18 freshman class is. Something Brad E. Schlossman wrote today caught my eye; “nobody you’ll see score 20 goals or put up 40 points as a rookie.”

Personally, I  think that’s a fair assessment, but I expect a top-six contribution from Grant Mismash and Jordan Kawaguchi. One of the players that I think can make an instant contribution is Kawaguchi. He’s a mature player at 20 years old and scored In 215 games with the Chilliwack Chiefs Kawaguchi scored (120g-122a—242pts), he was also plus-two. In his last two seasons with the Chiefs, Kawaguchi caught fire, scoring 111 goals and 168 points.

I like to see good things happen to good people. Former UND women’s hockey SID Ross LaDue has found a new job. LaDue was a victim of the numbers game when women’s hockey was cut this past March. Fast forward to this past summer, the UND athletic department had to make more cuts to their SID staff,  and LaDue’s job was slashed. Union College is getting an awesome team player that will do a great job with their Women’s team.

The dog days of summer and the temperature is rising. I never really understood donnybrooks in baseball. The Yankees are solidly in the first wild card spot. The Minnesota Twins are fighting with the Kansas City Royals and the Los Angeles Angles for the final wild card spot. Right now, the Twins have won 13- of-17 and they’re smoking hot.
