Sox Fall in Series Opener in the Bronx

The Red Sox have a 4 game series against the Yankees and the AL East is on the line.   The Sox had Eduardo Rodriguez on the mound vs. CC Sabathia for the Yankees.   Sabathia has given the Sox fits this year and the same would be true last night.   The Yankees got out to an early lead and then pulled away for good in the late inning.

The game stayed scoreless until the 3rd inning.   The Sox got a run off of Sabathia when Bogaerts hit an RBI grounder to score Nunez.  Sox 1-0.  The Yankees returned the favor in the bottom of the inning when Sanchez hit a solo home run off of Rodriguez to tie the game up 1-1.  The Yankees took the lead in the bottom of the 5th inning when Sanchez hit an RBI single off of ERod.  Sox 1-2.  The Yankees really started to pull away in the 6th inning when Headley hi a 2 run homer and Rodriguez got chased from the game.   Sox 1-4.  Abad came out in relief of Rodriguez and he ended up allowing one more run to score in the 6th when he gave up an RBI single to Gregorius.   Farrell came out to get Abad and brought Heath Hembree in to get the final out of the inning.   Hembree did his job to stop the bleeding and end the 6th inning.

Heath Hembree came back out for the 7th inning and wasn’t so lucky this time.   He gave up an RBI to Bird to now have the Yankees up 6-1.  Hembree loaded the bases and wasn’t able to record an out before Farrell went with Robby Scott instead.   Scott miraculously ended the inning without another run scoring by getting a double play and a strikeout.   It was a pretty magnificent thing to watch.   Blaine Boyer came out and pitched the 8th inning and then the game was on to the top of the 9th.   The Sox did put a decent rally and were able to score a single run to make the Yankees sweat when Benintendi walked with the bases loaded.   The Sox weren’t able to close the gap and the Yankees easily won 6-2.

Red Sox 2  Yankees 6  BOXSCORE

WP: Sabathia (11-5)  LP: Rodriguez (4-5)
