Sox Beat Rays Behind Another Strong Start From Pomeranz

The Red Sox are in the final stretch of the 2017 season and need every single win they can get.   The Sox have a 3 game series with the Rays and looked to keep their foot on the pedal.   The Sox started the series with Drew Pomeranz on the mound, who went from the guy Sox fans wanted to throw away to one of their most reliable starters.   Pomeranz continued to impress as he pitched another stellar outing and got his 15th win of the season.

The Sox bats got going right off the bat when Mookie Betts hit a 3 run homer in the bottom of the 1st.   Sox 3-0.  The 4th inning is when the Sox totally blew this game wide open when they scored 5 more runs.  Jackie Bradley Jr. hit an RBI single, Pedroia got on by way of an error and Vazquez came home to score, Benintendi hit an RBI single to chase Archer from the game, but the Sox weren’t done yet.   Against the Rays bullpen, Hanley Ramirez hit an RBI single and then the final run was scored when Mitch Moreland hit into a double play, but Benintendi was still able to come home to score.   Sox 8-0.

The long inning of scoring meant that Drew Pomeranz was sitting for quite a while and it looked like he had to knock some rust off in the top of the 5th.  Sucre hit a 2 run homer off of him to put the Rays on the board for the first time in the game.   Sox 8-2.  Pomeranz pitched through the 6th inning and then handed the ball over to the bullpen.

Joe Kelly came out for the 7th inning and found some trouble out of the gate.  Kelly loaded the bases with just one out to force Farrell to come out and get him in favor of Addison Reed.  The Rays got their 3rd run of the game when Duda hit an RBI groundout to score Hechavarria from 3rd.  That would be it though as Reed got the 3rd out of the inning and the Sox were still up 8-3.   The Sox got that run right back in the top of the 8th when Vazquez hit an RBI double to score Devers.   Sox 9-3.   Reed went back out for the 8th, but with one out he handed the ball over to Austin Maddox.   Maddox finished out the 8th and then also pitched a scoreless 9th.   The Rangers put a hurt on the Yankees, so the Sox are 4.5 games up in the race for the AL East.
