Sox Drop Final Game of Regular Season

The Sox had a little bit of a clinching hangover on Sunday afternoon for the final game of the season.   The Sox sent out a lot of the call-ups in the lineup, including starting pitcher Hector Velazquez.  The Sox got out to a quick lead, but then the Astros battled back and took the lead right back.  The Sox weren’t able to rally back and lost the final game of the season.   The Sox are now preparing to head to Houston and face off with the Astros once again in the ALDS.

The game stayed scoreless until the bottom of the 4th inning when the Sox bats scored three runs to give Velazquez the lead.  Rafael Devers hit a 2 run RBI double and then Devers came home to score on a passed ball.  Sox 3-0.  Velazquez was done after 4 innings and Robby Scott came into the game in the 5th inning.  Scott pitched a scoreless inning and then went back out in the 6th.  Scott got one out in the 6th before being pulled in favor of Brandon Workman.  Workman finished off the 6th and then headed back out for the 7th.

Workman allowed the first two batters to reach in the 7th and that meant Farrell had to go out and get him.  Fernando Abad came into the game, but he wasn’t able to limit the damage.  Abad allowed the Astros to tie the game by giving up RBI singles to Centeno, Moran and Kemp.  Farrell had seen enough and sent Matt Barnes to the mound in hopes of getting out of the inning with a tie.   Barnes wasn’t able to do that as he gave up an RBI sac fly to Gurriel.  Sox 3-4.  Barnes finished off the 7th, but the Astros still left the inning with the lead.  Barnes went back out for the 8th and redeemed himself by striking out the side in order.  Joe Kelly headed out for the 9th and pitched a scoreless inning to finish it out.  The Sox weren’t able to score again after the 4th inning, so the Astros won with ease.

Red Sox 3  Astros 4  BOXSCORE

WP: McHugh (5-2)  LP: Abad (2-1)  SV: Clippard (5)
