Rockets Owner: resigning Chris Paul, Clint Capela is a must

NBA: Playoffs-Houston Rockets at Golden State Warriors

New owner Tilman Fertitta made the team’s priorities rather straightforward.

“Gotta sign Chris [Paul], want to keep Clint [Capela],” he said, according to Lainie Fritz of KPRC Channel 2.

Fertitta isn’t expecting many roster changes to take place this summer, a vastly different approach from the roster overhaul the Rockets underwent in the 2017 offseason, trading for Chris Paul and adding loose pieces to make up for the seven players sent to the L.A. Clippers in exchange.

“You don’t mess with success,” said the owner.

I might be a prisoner of the moment, but the aftermath of the Houston Rockets 65 win season is beginning to remind me of what transpired after the Golden State Warriors blew a 3-1 lead versus LeBron. It was their wake up call, that they needed to make one more move in order to beat a healthy Cleveland team for the foreseeable future. This was the Rockets wake up call that they can be good for the future but they need to make tweaks.

resigning Chris Paul and Clint Capela are by far their biggest priority. Capela is turning into one of the best defensive bigs in the game, with his offense continuing to make strides. Chris Paul, was obviously the difference maker for this team — without him we saw the old Rockets, who were gassed and careless with the ball.

I don’t see any scenario where CP3 leaves Houston next season. The bitter taste in his mouth after getting hurt and losing to those Warriors won’t ever go away. But, the Rockets are the only team currently assembled that can oust Golden State. So I don’t see CP3 leaving even if another team offers more cash.

While the Rockets could have won with CP3 in for games 6 and 7, they need more depth and more size at the forward position. Going 1-30 from three point range is so bad I can’t put the words on it. The only similarity is how GSW didn’t score for the last 4 minutes of game 7 in 2016 Finals.

The x-factor here is the pursuit of LeBron James. He is why I think this is similar to the GSW collapse, they went and got Kevin Durant so they could beat LeBron. If LeBron does the same thing with that Houston roster, that’s when Golden State would fold in my opinion. I guess we will have to see, but I have a feeling Houston is Bron’s next home.
