Columbus Blue Jackets announce series of moves including first roster cuts

2015 NHL Draft - Round One

The first cuts of training camp are here and there are no real stand outs on the list. Vitaly Abramov, Sam Ruopp, Kole Sherwood and Calvin Thurkauf are all being returned to their respective CHL clubs. Jeremy Brodeur, Stephen Gibson and Francis Beauvillier were all released from their tryout contracts. This information all comes courtesy of the Blue Jackets via a press release.

A couple of injuries were announced in the release as well. Both Keegan Kolesar and Dillon Heatherington are going to be out for a period of time due to injury. Heatherington will be sidelined six weeks with a broken wrist after injuring it during practice on Tuesday. Kolesar will miss six to eight weeks with a supra-umbilical hernia. That type of hernia is right above the navel and can be very, very painful.

Kolesar was #24 in our 25 under 25 series and is going to have a very important year developmentally in Seattle. This is going to set him back but how much is it truly going to effect him? Heatherington was #18 in our 25 under 25 series and after an impressive first year with the Lake Erie Monsters, he was bound to be called up this year. Much like Kolesar, he needs this time to develop and round out his game, any time spent injured could prove to be detrimental to their development.

It is expected another round of cuts will be announced tomorrow before their game against Nashville.
