#TribeTopThree 8/25 Merritt throws gem in Game 1 of Players’ Weekend

Cleveland -4
Kansas City -0

Tribe Magic Number: 30

Short and Sweet:

Jorge Bonifacio opens the hit column for the Royals in the second inning and advances to third on a double by Alcides Escobar.  But they would be left stranded as Cheslor Cuthbert pops out to end the threat. Jay Bruce draws a walk in the bottom half of the frame as the Indians have their first baserunner of the evening. Royals starter Jason Vargas gets Carlos Santana and Brandon Guyer on a line out and ground out as we progress to the third inning of play. Alex Gordon leads off with a two base hit off Tribe rookie Ryan Merritt who has been back and forth between Cleveland and the Columbus Clippers this season. Giovanny Urshela continues his hot streak at the plate and doubles to left giving the Indians the 1-0 lead.

Austin Jackson follows up with a RBI single extending the lead to 2-0 all in the bottom of the third. Merritt is doing a fantastic job of shutting down the Royals hitters through six solid innings of work so far. Frankie Lindor provides a cushion in the scoring department as he hits another homer and a 4-0 Tribe lead as we move to the bottom of the sixth. The Indians have eight hits with the four runs and Kansas City has six hits with zero runs on the board in the seventh inning of the game. That will be it from both teams in the scoring department as both bullpens shut the hitters down.
