Kansas City -0
Magic Number: 28
Short and Sweet:
Mike Clevinger is on the bump today for the Tribe as Game 2 of players’ weekend gets under way. He makes quick work of the Royals top of the order and Jason Hammel counters with his own hitless first inning of play. The first hits of the night do not come until the top of the fourth inning with consecutive singles by Melky Cabrera and Eric Hosmer as there are runners on the corners with one out. Clevinger is able to strike out Salvy Perez but issues a walk to Mike Moustakas and the bases are loaded. Alcides Escobar pops out to second base and the Indians work out of the jam but they are still looking for their first hit of the game. Kansas City’s starter has yet to walk a man as he remains perfect through five innings of play tonight.
Bradley Zimmer breaks up the perfect game via base hit in the bottom of the sixth inning. Roberto Perez gives the Indians 2-0 lead with his third home run of the season as the Tribe look to break the game wide open. Frankie Lindor keeps the hits going with another single, but two fly ball puts end the frame with just the two runs. Edwin Encarnacion and Carlos Santana hit back to back jacks in the bottom of the seventh as the Tribe take the 4-0 lead in the late innings. Bryan Shaw comes in relief of Clevinger and gets his one hundredth hold of his career tied with Paul Shuey for tenth most appearances in Indians history and fourth most relief appearances. Zimmer gets his second hit of the game and steals second base, also advancing to third on a error by Perez. A couple of walks juice the bases for the Tribe but AJax strikes out to end the threat. Jay Bruce draws a two out walk in the bottom of the eighth still shutting out the KC 4-0 as they have outscored the Royals eight to nothing in two games so far. The Indians shutout Kansas City again and have won three in a row as the push for the postseason gets closer and closer.
