Cardinals End Up Winning The Weekend

Sometimes you get the breaks, sometimes the breaks get you.

For six innings on Sunday afternoon, Matt Garza was making the Cardinals look even worse than the toothless offense we’ve watched most of 2014. It was cold. And it was clinical.

When the Brewers took the field in the bottom of the 7th, Garza (whose pitch count was at 71) was absent. In his place Zach Duke, who promptly served up a Wainwright approved pipe shot that Matt Holliday drilled to deep left center.

The Cardinals didn’t stop the rally until they had flipped a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 lead and knocked Duke out of the game.

The Cardinals are now 2-33 when trailing after 6 innings, so let us celebrate this comeback win, my friends.

Garza has reportedly suffered a left oblique strain, but most of the hurt the Brewers are experiencing doesn’t come from a temporary set back from one player in the midst of a great outing. No, Milwaukee had St. Louis on the ropes. They kicked Wainwright’s butt on Friday night and were poised to be as many as 5 games up leaving town.

Instead, their lead was trimmed to 1 behind a strong effort from newcomer John Lackey and (finally) some timely hitting.

With a day off on Monday, the Cardinals should be in a better head space and ready for a weird series with Boston starting Tuesday. Weird because it’s not often that a defending World Series champ is in complete re-build mode the following year… with a couple former teammates that joined the effort less than a week prior.

We went into the weekend with a pact that we’d judge the Cardinals on Friday forward. Winning a series against the team you’re chasing is a good start.

Now… if we could just figure out if Peter Bourjos will ever swing the bat again, we might really have something. That man is really intent on keeping the ‘in’ in infield.
