Curious Coaching & The Friday Links

I'm confused.

Bottom of the 5th inning. First three batters of the inning reach for the Cardinals and Lance Lynn comes up to bat with no outs and Danny Descalso on first base.

The Cardinals had gotten tagged for 4 runs in the top of the inning, so this rally was not just welcome, but needed. And yes, in the parlance of this week, three consecutive hits and 2 runs scored is a rally.

So what does Mike Matheny do?

He lets Lance Lynn bat for himself. He bunts. He pops out to the pitcher.

Ok, ok. Let's assume that Lynn executes the bunt. And moves Descalso to 2nd. That still isn't the run that ties the game or puts the Cardinals ahead. And the only reason you'd have him bunt is if you think he'd pitch through the 6th (at the minimum).

The Cardinals ending up scoring 3 more runs in the 5th, so we kind of forget about this move. But as soon as Matheny removed Lynn 1 out later in the top of the 6th, I made a note to myself that the Cardinals might win this game despite some very questionable managing.

I like Mike Matheny.

But he's nearing the completion of his second season as a MLB manager and he's still making moves that don't just seem short sided, but seem downright wrong.

That's it. That's the week. The Cardinals are in Chicago to try and atone for their miserable performance last weekend. It's time to go to work, men.
