There were parts of this winter that we weren’t sure if Memorial Day would ever get here. Thoughts of pools opening and BBQ pits getting scrapped off were as realistic as a Joffrey Baratheon fan club.

The polar vortex, man.

But we’re here. We made it.

Memorial Day was formerly known as Decoration Day and it originated after the civil war when both union and confederate graves were adorned with flowers and other remembrances. The exact start of this tradition is up for debate, but in 1966 President Johnson signed a proclamation naming Waterloo NY as the birthplace of Memorial Day.

Here’s to all the military men and women that lost their lives in the line of duty.
