FCS Playoffs: Georgia Southern 49 ODU 35

We usually stick to FBS college football on here but this is the time of the year when the FCS and their playoffs get to have a little fun while the "big boys" prepare for their Bowl Games. Today, ESPN featured a really intriguing match-up on their flagship channel. The Old Dominion Monarchs (11-1) faced the Georgia Southern Eagles (9-3) in the quarter-finals of the FCS Playoffs. This game was a rematch from 2011 when Georgia Southern beat Old Dominion 55-48 late in the season.

This game was intriguing mainly because of the offenses that both teams featured. The Eagles run the triple option and the Monarchs like to spread out their receivers and throw the ball around. Old Dominion's sophomore QB Taylor Heinicke got some press earlier this season when he threw for 730 yards in a 64-61 win over New Hampshire.

This game did not disappoint. The Monarchs jumped out to a 21-14 halftime lead while Taylor Heinicke broke Steve McNair's single season FCS passing record. ODU extended it's lead to 28-14 lead in the third quarter and finally had a 35-21 lead late in the third but after that it was all Georgia Southern.

Georgia Southern would rush for over 600 yards in this game and score the final 28 points to take a 49-35 win. Georgia Southern will move on to take on top ranked North Dakota State or Wofford.
