Colts Roster Moves Week 10-11

Earlier this week the Colts released wide receiver Chris Brooks from the active roster and re-signed safety Chip Vaughn.  The move increases the likelihood that wide receiver Austin Collie will return for the match-up against New England Sunday afternoon.  It also suggests that the Colts saw enough in Chip Vaughn during his recent stint with the team to bring him back to the active roster and take a closer look.

I was a little disappointed when I learned that the Colts released Vaughn as he was a pre-2009 NFL Draft favorite of mine.  Hopefully he will stick around long enough to have a chance to learn the system and compete with Mike Newton and Aaron Francisco for a long-term spot on the roster and chance to compete the 2011 off-season.

The Colts also added safety Michael Greco to the practice squad.  Anthony Blake of Blitz Nation provides a good look at Greco, who was originally signed as a free agent by the New York Giants, and recently released by Green Bay.  He has an interesting college history.  Greco is 6-foot 3 inches tall, weighs 217 pounds, and played only one year at safety (senior).  He was a quarterback in junior college and at North Carolina State from his freshman through his junior years.

What is even more impressive and uncharacteristic for a player like Greco at his size, weight, and with his history at quarterback is that he put up a 41.5 inch vertical jump, 22 bench reps of 225 pounds, and is reported as registering a sub-4.4 second 40 yard dash.  Anytime a player with those kind of workout numbers bounces around a lot it suggests that he may simply be a workout warrior but a player with a quarterback perspective on passing offenses playing the safety position is certainly intriguing on a team that emphasizes football acumen as much as the Colts.
