Pats deal Randy Moss

Ok, so that happened.

The Randy Moss era is all but over in New England.

With rumors swirling that the Pats will score a 3rd round pick for a guy that cost them a 4th, everyone seems amazed at the Patriots ability to stockpile future draft picks.  Personally, I’m amazed that they keep pissing away the present for an uncertain future.

The NFL is not baseball.  You don’t build for the future.  You play for now.  As the Jets showed, you can go from irrelevant to relevant in the blink of an eye.  After Moss dogged his way through the Pats’ Monday night win, he’s now possibly on his way to play in Minnesota with Brett Favre.

Meanwhile, the Pats are going to replace his three touchdowns on the season (a third of NE’s total passing TDs this year) with more throws to tight ends.

For a team living off its offense, it’s hard to see how this move helps them.

Suddenly, the underneath and seam routes that have allowed Brady to thrive won’t be so open.  With out Moss to occupy a safety deep, I have to wonder if the New England offense will have the luxury of space that has allowed Welker and Edleman to thrive.

Considering that I have zero respect for Belichick’s drafting ability, the Pats are trading away any hopes they had for a great 2010 for a third round pick.

Good luck with that.

You’re gonna need it.
