2013 Central Scouting Final Rankings Movement Tracker

Seth Jones & Nathan MacKinnon

Barring some improbable draft twist the Minnesota Wild can forget about drafting either of these two players in top rated Seth Jones and Nathan MacKinnon.  In fact, at this point Wild fans can probably look forward to a very quiet 1st round as for the first time in franchise history the team does not have have a selection in the first round of the NHL Entry Draft after trading it to the Buffalo Sabres as part of the Jason Pominville deal.  With the late start to the season due to the lockout and the Wild's playoff run I'm starting my series of draft-focused articles a little later than normal.  Even though the Wild do not currently hold a 1st round pick doesn't make this year's draft any less important for them or any of the league's 29 other teams.  In a salary cap world, the draft becomes important for teams to maximize, as they try to field the best team they possibly can under the cap.  Using players on Entry Level deals can really help a team maximize its dollars.  By not having a 1st round pick the Wild will have to really do its homework in order to find the best talent it can in the later rounds.  Part of that 'homework' for myself starts when the NHL Central Scouting Bureau, the league's talent assessment gurus puts together their final rankings.  There are lots of lists to choose from; McKeen's, International Scouting Service, The Hockey News, and TSN all put out a list of where they feel the talent is.

2013 NHL Entry Draft

For the last few years I have taken the NHL Central Scouting Bureau's lists and made a color-coded movement tracker to see which prospects who rose and fell from the mid-term rankings.  Its a simple way to track the trajectory of a prospect in the eyes of NHL scouts.  Its meant to be a tool for you to use when you put together your mock draft lists.  Is it scientific?  Nope, but if it makes it easier to notice those players climbing fast and those spiraling downward its worth it.  So which players are moving on up in the rankings and who are falling?

NHL Central Scouting

The lists can also be an indicator to the stability of the rankings.  If you see a lot of different colors it means there is lots of change in the rankings meaning scouts might be unsure of where players should be, whereas if you see a lot of gray the scouts are confident of where the players stand.  The experts have been saying that this year's crop of prospects is one of the best in years.  I am not sold on that belief at all.  Why?  When I read through the assessments almost all of the prospects have considerable holes to their game or seem to have some major questions about their potential.  Maybe its just me but those areas of concern combine to make me question the strength of this draft class.  I think experts; especially those at TSN and the Hockey News are almost always 'bullish' on the draft because they're trying to build up their ratings or sell a few more magazines.  You don't do that by saying this draft will be underwhelming.

I have color coded all of NHL Central Scouting's lists.  Overall there is more stability in the North American rankings than the European lists, but that is not unusual.  The Wild have shown a tendency to want to select those prospects that were fast risers.  Brent Burns, Brett Bulmer and Justin Falk were examples of this.  The European skaters list often Here are the top 5 risers and 5 players who have experienced major drops of any list of those players who were rated in the mid-term and final rankings.

Top 5 Risers:

1. D – Keegan Kanzing (Victoria, WHL) ~ 112 from 194 ~ The 6'5", 238lbs behemoth blueliner was the top riser, moving up 82 spots from his mid-term rankings.  The defenseman is your classic, big mean stay home defenseman who had 0 goals and 7 assists to go along with a 159 PIM's in 70 games.

2. D – Kyle Burroughs (Regina, WHL) ~ 133 from 206 ~ The smaller offensive-minded defenseman rose an impressive 73 spots after a strong season with the Pats.  The 5'11", 175lbs defenseman had 5 goals, 33 points and 91 PIM's in 70 games.

3.  C – Peter Quenneville (Dubuque, USHL) ~ 130 from 192 ~ The Qunnipiac commit had a terrific season for Dubuque where he put up 33 goals and 70 points which is why he rose 73 spots.  The 5'11", 175lbs Edmonton-native helped lead the Saints to a Clark Cup as USHL Champions.

4. RW – Vyacheslav Leschenko (Mytischi-2, Rus. Div. 2) ~ 32 from 103 ~ The skilled Russian forward had 9 goals and 19 points in 53 games.  The 6'0", 161lbs winger rose 71 spots.

5.  D – Samuel Morin (Rimouski, QMJHL) ~ 23 from 76 ~ The 6'6", 203lbs defenseman has potentially climbed into the NHL's 1st round after a strong season.  The big-bodied stay at home blueliner rose 53 spots in the rankings after putting up 4 goals, 16 points, 117 penalty minutes and was a +10 in 46 games this season.

Top 5 sinkers:

1.  RW – Bronson Beaton (Cape Breton, QMJHL) ~ 194 from 103 ~ The Screaming Eagles' winger has the dubious distinction of being the biggest sinker according to the NHL Central Scouting after having fallen 91 spots.  The 6'1", 202lbs center had a forgettable 13 goals, 32 points and was a woeful -32 for Cape Breton.

2.  LW – Stephen Harper (Erie, OHL) ~ 128 from 38 ~ I promise you this isn't some hidden political joke about Canada's Prime Minister.  Harper fell 90 spots, and out of being a potential 2nd round pick to being selected in the 5th or later rounds after rough season for the Otters.  The 6'2", 200lbs winger had 18 goals and 38 points as well as being an ugly -38 in 67 games.

3.  LW – Trevor Moore (Tri-City, USHL) ~ 192 from 108 ~ The Storm's leading scorer and University of Denver commit fell 84 spots from the mid-term rankings.  The 5'9", 170lbs winger had 20 goals and 63 points, but his -20 did not impress scouts.

4.  D – Juuso Riikola (Kalpa Jr. Fin. Jr.) ~ 115 from 55 ~ The offensively inclined defenseman fell 60 spots in the rankings after playing just 6 games in the Sm-Liiga this season where he had 6 assists in 20 games.  The 6'0", defenseman did not impress scouts with his super slight 157lbs frame.

5.  C – Brody Silk (Sudbury, OHL) ~ 161 from 107 ~ The agitating winger did not find the back of the net nearly enough for the scouts' liking as he fell 54 spots.  The 6'0", 185lbs winger had just 12 goals and 36 points to go along with 102 penalty minutes and was a -5 in 55 games.
