2014 NHL Central Scouting Movement Tracker
NHL Central Scouting Mid-Term and Final Lists allow fans to see movement of potential NHL draft prospects.

With the conclusion of the Minnesota Wild season on Tuesday against the Blackhawks that now forces fans across the State of Hockey to consider the future of the team.  It could be about its current roster, which had its share of struggles and success stories.  While some of its veterans had difficulty in chipping in much offensively; it was the play of some of its younger core in Charlie Coyle, Nino Niederreiter, Mikael Granlund, Darcy Kuemper and Erik Haula which seemed to allow Minnesota to last as long as it did this post-season.  It is the relative success of this young core that should make Wild fans excited about another NHL draft this summer.  Even if experts tend to agree that this class is weaker than some of the rest over the last few years; the team still enters the draft with most of its picks intact.  Diamonds can be found all over the draft and for talent savvy teams like Detroit, and Nashville they’ve done a tremendous job of finding key contributors beyond the 1st round.  A study done back in 2011 (you can read an article about it here) by Simon Fraser University found that players taken beyond the 2nd round have a 17% chance of making the NHL; going so far as to suggest a coin flip or a guess rather than spending lots and lots of time and money scouting these players who are destined to be later round picks.  Maybe that’s true.  Perhaps just guessing or assigning players might be better than what is currently done.  Yet, how does Detroit seem to do better than just guessing?  Gustav Nyquist, Darren Helm, Joakim Andersson, Jonathan Ericsson, Valterri Filppula, Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg were all taken AFTER the 2nd round.  That’s a pretty significant chunk of that organization.  Going back to my small listing of young Wild players; out of that group only Darcy Kuemper (a 6th round pick, 161st Overall in 2009) Erik Haula (a 7th round pick, 182nd Overall in 2009) is the only picks that was a later round selection.  The Wild are perhaps starting to do a little better than just guessing too, and in a salary cap world that’s important that they do.

Aaron Ekblad picked by some to be likely to go 1st Overall, or will he?

The other great question just about every year, who will go #1 overall?  Barrie Colts’ defenseman Aaron Ekblad has been the favorite for much of the season but will he manage to be taken before Kingston’s Sam Bennett?  With the Wild set to draft 18th Overall, who’s available.  What I’ve done is to try to take the NHL Central Scouting Final List and create a color coded map to what players have been raised their stock and which have seen it fall.  For those of you out there who are draft junkies like myself I hope it helps you come up with your mock drafts or gives you an idea on how the scouts feel about a player’s trajectory over the course of a season.

2014 NHL Central Scouting Movement Tracker
A few years ago, Brett Bulmer was a fast riser in Central Scouting’s rankings before becoming the Wild’s 2nd round selection.

Some teams love the ‘late bloomer’ the player whose stock rises big time from the mid-term rankings to the final ones.  The Wild certainly were buying into that when the team selected Brent Burns back in 2003 where he rose from mid-100’s to rising up to the top 50 which coincided with a late growth spurt.  Then in 2009, the Wild selected Brett Bulmer in the 2nd round, 39th Overall in 2010 after rising up the rankings from the mid-100’s to the top 40.  Injuries have slowed Bulmer’s development significantly, but his trajectory was simply too good to pass up for Wild scouts and that was why they pulled the trigger on him.  A 6’3″, 219lbs power forward who can dangle a little, score and loves to hit and cause trouble too.  Hopefully he can stay healthy enough next season to recapture that form that made him such an intriguing pick.

Another reason I do this color coded list is to get an idea as to how the scouts see this draft.  It is a well-known fact that many have said the 2014 Draft class is weaker than in previous seasons, and that lack of faith is reflected in how NHL Central Scouting has rated this group.  In the North American skaters; it starts out relatively solid until about Top 11, but after that it seems to fluctuate wildly which indicates scouts opinions changed a lot through the course of a season which is a hallmark of inconsistency.  So who are the big risers from this year’s class?  According to NHL Central Scouting
