72. Toronto Maple Leafs at Boston Bruins. Break Out The Brooms

St. Patrick’s Day is over. There will be no more green hockey jerseys. I am whole again.

Another good thing about St. Patrick’s Day being over is that the Bruins came away with a win against the Philadelphia Flyers and the Senators lost later that night to the Leafs (lol). Jon will be doing a weekend recap that probably includes some hockey, some boozing and some general badassery.

This is the Bruins last home game until they play the Tampa Bay Rapists on March 27th. You know what that means? 3 game California road trip. I fucking hate these things man. I hate the late start times, I hate that I want to watch a team like Los Angeles Kings and even with a 9pm start, the first period won’t get over until 10:15 or so. The worst will be San Jose, which doesn’t start until 10:30pm. So you’re looking at a 10:35/10:40pm puck drop and the first period will end about 11:30ish. That fucking blows. Especially on a Thursday night. What I don’t get is that a Thursday night game has a 10:30pm start, but a Saturday night game has a 9pm start. Why not switch the two of them? Most people have to work on Friday, so there’s little chance that they’ll stay up for the entire game while most people are up later on Saturday nights.

Fuck it, I probably won’t stay up to watch the Kings game either because Sunday is my day to get up with Baby Pez and that little bugger seems to like 5:30 lately.

But lets not over look tonight’s game.

The Bruins are going for a season sweep against the Maple Leafs. For the year the Bruins are 5-0 against the Leafs. They have scored 28 goals and have only allowed 10. That’s pretty fucking good. The most goals the Bruins have allowed in one game against the Leafs was 4 and that was the March 6th 5-4 win. The Bruins were actually leading that game 5-3 at one point, so it’s not like the game was actually in jeopardy. Honestly, I would expect more of the same tonight. The Bruins, for some reason, are able to impose their will on Toronto like none other.

It feels like the big brother/little brother situation, expect for that the little brother can never muster up the strength to take his older brother out. The older brother just keeps beating on his little brother and making him do terrible things like eating dirt. Hey man, shit happens.

My hope is that the Bruins can take some momentum from Saturday and carry it for these final 11 games. I know momentum is more of a mental thing, but this team needs it. I’ll be honest, I thought when they gave up the game tying goal with about 4 minutes left in the game, it was going to be over. I figured the Flyers were going to score with either seconds left or in OT. It’s just how the bounces have been going for Boston.

Then came the shootout. Then came both goalies not trying to stop a puck until Timmy put Briere in his place.

So I expect the Bruins to roll against Toronto. I don’t care how they’re playing as of late. I don’t care that they’re 1-4 in their last 5 games. They own Toronto.

After the jump, more previewness...

Ottawa is currently sitting in the 7th spot in the Eastern Conference and is 1 point behind the Bruins. As most of us already know, if Ottawa wins and Boston loses, they’ll jump to 2nd and Boston will fall to 7th.

Next game: Tuesday March 20, 2012 at home vs the Devils.

Season Series vs. New Jersey:

Record: 1-0-1.
