Every game, every where on the Internet at some point in time, there’s a few assholes making racist, sexist, homophobic, etc. comments for the world to see. It’s happened before. And it happened again last night after PK Subban scored a game winner.

Bruins President Cam Neely issued the following statement:
“The racist, classless views expressed by an ignorant group of individuals following Thursday’s game via digital media are in no way a reflection of anyone associated with the Bruins organization.
Well, I’m glad we cleared up the obvious.
The fact that this even has to be mentioned by the Bruins is awful, and it has a lot to do with media looking for click bait stories (aka $$$) and fans who don’t like the Bruins going out of their way to smear the entire fanbase. These bullshit tweets happen all the time and it sucks. But it only comes out with Boston because folks are looking for it because narratives and stereotypes. If you’re following these people tweeting racist shit, I ask you why? If you’re not, why are you searching for it in the first place? And do you do this every time PK Subban scores or Wayne Simmonds scores or another non-white player scores? Or just against Boston?
As for the media, the worst part of their “Look at these racist tweets!” stories is that they do nothing to educate about the issue. They’re posted ’cause they’ll pull in 30K pageviews meaning a nice boost in ad revenue. You might not be racist yourself for posting those type of stories, but you’re doing a good job at capitalizing on racism. That’s not exactly all that great either.
Seriously, only Bruins fans get hit with this racist label when a few people say something stupid out of tens of thousands. You never see Habs fans getting labeled the same even though a few of their fans do blackface every year. Or whenever poor Joel Ward or Simmonds gets a banana thrown at them by an individual at an away game. It’s dumb and easily the most annoying narrative of every Bruins-Habs series… well above Bruins are goons and Habs are divers.
