Preseason Game #2: Boston Bruins at Washington Capitals

The Bruins' Group B won 6-3 in Montreal last night, cashing in on 4 power play goals and a stunning preseason debut from Jarome Iginla.

You can check out Justin's recap of last night's game here. With Group B having such a dominating performance last night, it's time for Group A to step up to the plate. Here is who is in Group A:

Forwards: Carter Camper, Jordan Caron, Jack Downing, Loui Eriksson, Justin Florek, Seth Griffith, Chris Kelly, Alexander Khokhlachev, Jared Knight, Matt Lindblad, Brad Marchand, Bobby Robins, Reilly Smith

Defensemen: Johnny Boychuk, Chris Casto, Dougie Hamilton, Mike Moore, Joe Morrow, Dennis Seidenberg, David Warsofsky

Goaltenders: Tuukka Rask, Niklas Svedberg

I would expect the Bruins to tweet out the projected lines soon.

So there's something I want to take away from last night's game that bothers me, even though I don't get NHL Network and didn't watch it. What really bothers me is the new penalty where you can get 2 minutes for removing your helmet before a fight. For those who haven't heard about this new rule yet, apparently when a player removes his own helmet before a fight there is a 2 minute minor penalty that accompanies the 5 minute major.

I'm not sure what the point of this penalty is. Maybe it is to curb fighting in the NHL, but even then will it actually do anything? Puck Daddy had a good piece on it:

As the 2013-14 NHL season nears, players and fans alike are getting acquainted with some of the new rules and tweaks passed in the offseason. There are shallower nets and smaller goalie gear. But there’s also a rule that’ll affect how hockey fights begin … and how long a player remains in the penalty box after one.

The NHL’s general managers agreed to, and the Board of Governors approved, a new rule that levies a two-minute minor penalty on any player that removes his helmet before a fight. That’s seven minutes in the box, barring any additional penalties: two for unsportsmanlike conduct and five for fighting.

And it's happened in the preseason already. It's foolish.

After the jump, the rest...

Projected Lines

Marchand – Khokhlachev – Eriksson
Caron – Kelly – Smith
Downing – Camper – Knight
Florek – Lindblad – Robbins

I would also say it's a safe bet that Tuukka gets the start tonight and both goalies will see time. I'm excited to see what Svedberg can bring to the table after a phenominal year in the AHL.
