Magic Number Still At 3: Sox Lose 2nd Straight to Jays

The Red Sox hoped to get either a Sox win, a Yanks loss or ideally both to help them clinch the AL East.   Unfortunately Chris Sale struggled on the mound and got bit by the home run bug while the Yankees won over in the Bronx.

The Jays started the game last night just like they did the night before, by scoring a single run in the top of the 1st.  Donaldson hit a solo home run off of Sale to have the Jays up 1-0.  The Sox tied it up in the bottom of the 1st when Chris Young hit an RBI double to score Bogaerts.   Sox 1-1.  Donaldson struck again in the 3rd inning when he hit another solo home run off of Sale.   Sox 1-2.  Things really fell apart for Sale in the 5th inning.  Hernandez hit a solo home run to start the inning and then Morales hit a 2 run homer to put the Jays up 5-1.  Sale was done after 5 innings and I don’t think I’ve ever seen him give up 4 home runs in one outing.

While Sale was giving up runs, the Sox offense wasn’t getting anything going against Jays pitcher Happ.   Matt Barnes came out of the pen for the 6th and pitched a scoreless inning.  Joe Kelly pitched a scoreless 7th inning and then went back out for the 8th.  Kelly gave up an RBI single to Goins before Hembree was called to the mound.   Hembree wasn’t able to limit the damage as he gave up a 3 run homer to Hernandez, the first batter he faced.  Sox 1-9.  Hembree finished off the inning, but the damage had been done.

The Sox offense finally woke up once Happ was out of the game.   Sandy Leon hit a solo home run in the 8th to give the Sox their 2nd run of the game.  Sox 2-9.  The inning was finished off by Davis hitting an RBI double and Ramirez hit an RBI single.   Sox 4-9.  Hector Velazquez pitched a scoreless 9th inning, but the Sox weren’t able to score again in the bottom of the 9th.  The Jays won their 2nd straight game and the Sox still need 3 to lock up the AL East.

Red Sox 4  Blue Jays 9  BOXSCORE

WP: Happ (10-11)  LP: Sale (17-8)
