Porcello Seems to Be Regaining Form At Perfect Time As Sox Beat Yanks!

The Red Sox and the Yankees came into the rubber game of the series, both teams looking for the series win.   The Sox had reigning Cy Young winner Rick Porcello on the mound vs. Sonny Gray for the Sox.   Porcello has struggled mighty this season, but in his last few outings, he seems more like 2016 Rick Porcello than what we’ve seen for most of 2017.   That trend would continue yesterday as Porcello only allowed one run and got plenty of run support from the Sox bats.   The Sox took the series from the Yankees and now are sitting 5 games above them in the fight for the AL East.

The Sox took an early lead in the 2nd inning when they scored two runs off Gray.  Jackie Bradley Jr. hit a 2 run RBI triple to score Bogaerts and Leon.  Sox 2-0.  Porcello didn’t give up a run until he was in the 5th inning.   Porcello gave up a solo home run to Brett Gardner to have the Yankees within one run.  Sox 2-1.  The Sox bats got that run back in the 6th inning when Jackie Bradley Jr. hit an RBI single to score Moreland.  Sox 3-1.   At this point, all the RBI in the game were from one Mr. Jackie Bradley Jr.   Porcello was done after 6 innings and he looked like a guy who belongs in the post season rotation.  His pitching line was 103 pitches, 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 3 BB and 4 Ks.

Brandon Workman came out of the bullpen and pitched a scoreless 7th, followed by Addison Reed who pitched a scoreless 8th inning.   The Sox bats got some insurance runs in the bottom of the 8th when Sandy Leon hit a 2 run RBI double to score Bogaerts and Moreland.   Sox 5-1.   Craig Kimbrel was up and warmed, so he came in for the 9th even though it was no longer a save situation.   Kimbrel made easy work of the Yankees and secured the win and the series.
