Sale Gets 300th K While Sox Sweep O’s!

The Red Sox and the O’s had the final game of their 3 game series last night.  The Sox won the first two games of the series and since the Yankees already won earlier in the day, they needed to sweep in order to maintain their 3 game lead in the East.   Luckily, the Sox had their ace Chris Sale on the mound.   Sale not only dominated the O’s, but he also recorded 13 Ks in his 8 innings of work and got his 300th K for the season!  The Sox offense got Sale all the runs he needed and the Sox swept the O’s before heading off to Cincy for 3 games of interleague play.

The Sox were facing a former Sox in Wade Miley.   The Sox bats made Miley work and ended up getting 6 runs off of him before sending him to the showers in the 5th.  The Sox scored 4 runs in the top of the 4th inning.  Mookie Betts hit a 2 run homer and then Deven Marrero copied him with a 2 run homer of his own.  Sox 4-0.  Wiley ended up walking two Sox batters in the 5th inning and that ended his evening of work.  The rest of the game would be in the hands of the O’s bullpen and Hanley Ramirez immediately got all over them.  Ramirez hit a 2 run RBI double in the top of the 5th to bring the lead up to 6-0.   The Sox grabbed two more runs in the top of the 8th when Pedroia hit a 2 RBI double.   Sox 8-0.

Miley was being worked hard, but Sale on the other hand was basically breezing through his outing.   Sale has struggled through much of September, but he put that in the rear view window in his outing last night.   Sale left the mound after the 7th inning with 299 Ks on the season.  Farrell sent him back out for the 8th and he got the third out by way of the K to record his 300th K.   Sale became the first Sox pitcher to record 300 Ks or more in a single season since 1999.  And of course that player in 1999 was Pedro Martinez.   Sale is putting himself in some pretty great company with the impressive pitching he has displayed this season.   Sale was done after 8 innings, but the Sox offense still had one more RBI in them.   Ramirez hit an RBI single in the top of the 9th to put the Sox up 9-0.  Hanley went 3 for 5 on the night and had 3 RBI.   Maddox came out to pitch the 9th and while he allowed two hits in the inning, he was able to keep the O’s off the board and maintain the shutout.
