Sox Battle Back and Beat Yankees in Extras!

The Sox and Yanks were tied up 1-1 coming into the game on Sunday night.   The Sox had their ace Chris Sale on the mound, so they had all the reason in the world to be confident.   Sale did his job and pitched his usual dominant outing, however the Sox could only get him a single run of support.   Sale left with a no decision and then the Yankees took the lead heading into the 9th.   That’s when Rafael Devers was the hero and hit a 103 mph fastball to tie the game up and send it to extras.   The Sox scored in the 10th and Craig Kimbrel was able to keep the Yankees off the board for the win.  The Sox are now sitting 5.5 games up on the Yankees in the AL East.

The Yankees had Jordan Montgomery on the mound, who the day before was hit by a ball in BP and had to go through concussion protocol.   It didn’t seem to affect him any, as he was putting in a pretty decent outing.    The only run Montgomery gave up was an RBI single to Bradley Jr. in the 5th to give the Sox an early lead.   Sox 1-0.   The Yankees were able to answer right back though when Romine hit an RBI triple off of Sale in the bottom of the inning.   Sox 1-1.  Chris Sale put in his usual, dominant performance.   He pitched 7 strong innings, but with the game tied 1-1, he’d leave in line for a no decision.   Sale’s pitching line was 114 pitches, 7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 2 BB and 12 Ks.

Matt Barnes came out for the 8th inning, however things did not go to plan.  With one out in the inning, Barnes issued a walk, a single and then another walk.   Frazier hit an RBI sac fly off of Barnes to give the Yankees the lead late in the game.   Sox 1-2.  Robby Scott came out to get the 3rd out in the inning to send it on to the 9th.   Aroldis Chapman took to the mound for the 9th for the Yankees.   The closer had one out in the inning and two strikes against rookie Rafael Devers when he hit a 103 mph fastball out of the park.   Game tied 2-2.  Addison Reed came out for the bottom of the 9th to hopefully send the game to extras.   Reed walked Headley to start the inning.   In a bizarre move by John Farrell, he came out mid at bat to Jacoby Ellsbury trying to make a pitching change.   Farrell was reminded of the rules and sent back to the dugout.   Reed got the 2nd out of the inning and the Farrell came to get his closer.  Reed looked visibly pissed that he got the out and was still being taken out of the game.   Kimbrel came in and got the 3rd out to send the game on to the 10th.  Chapman came back out for the Yankees in the 10th.   Chapman hit a batter and issued a walk with one out in the inning to force Girardi to go to his bullpen.   Kahnle came into the game and walked Betts to load the bases.   Andrew Benintendi came to the plate and hit an RBI sac fly to put the Sox out in front.   Sox 3-2.  Kimbrel came out to finish off the inning and give the series to the Sox.   It was a hard fought game and the Red Sox were able to add another game in their lead for the AL East.
