Sox Bullpen Falters and Gives a Win to the Royals

The Red Sox were looking to take the series against the Royals on Wednesday afternoon and had Drew Pomeranz on the mound to do it.   Pomeranz continued to impress and left the mound in line for the win.   Unfortunately the Sox bullpen which was usually been very good this year fell apart in the 8th inning and gave up the game winning grand slam.

Just like the game before, the Royals got on the scoreboard first when Moustakas ground into a double play in the 2nd, but Hosmer was still able to come around to score.   Sox 0-1.  The Royals grabbed another run in the 3rd when Merrifield hit an RBI sac fly off of Pomeranz.   The Sox bats finally got cooking and tied the game in the top of the 4th when Benintendi and Bogaerts hit back to back solo home runs to start the inning.   Sox 2-2.

The Sox grabbed the lead in the 5th inning when Betts hit an RBI sac fly and then Marrero came home to score by way of error from the Royals.   Sox 4-2.  Pomeranz was now pitching with the lead and looked like he wanted to keep it that way.  Pomeranz took the mound in the 7th and when he gave up two singles with one out, Farrell came out to get him.   Joe Kelly was in to close out the inning.  Kelly got an out, but then walked Torres to have the bases loaded.   Kelly got out of the jam when he got Merrifield to line out to end the inning.   Pomeranz’s pitching line for the night was 93 pitches, 6.1 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 BB and 5 Ks.

It’s the 8th inning when everything fell apart for the Sox.   Matt Barnes took to the mound and clearly had control issues.  Barnes walked the first two batters he faced and then Farrell went to get him in favor of Robby Scott.   Scott walked a batter as well to have the bases loaded and no outs.  Scott didn’t want to walk Perez and force in a run, but instead he gave up a Grand Slam to now put the Royals up by 2 runs.   Sox 4-6.  Scott then gave up a single and Hembree came in to try to stop the bleeding.   Hembree got the 3 outs the team needed, but the damage was already done.  The Sox had this game in their hands, but the bullpen wasn’t able to get the job done and the Royals won the series.
