Sox Rally in the 7th to Take Down the Yankees

The Sox are hosting the Yankees for the next 3 games and hoping to put even more distance between the two in the race for the AL East. The Sox had Drew Pomeranz on the mound vs. Jordan Montgomery for the Yankees. The Sox got out to an early lead, but the Pomeranz left the game in the 4th with back spasms and the Sox bullpen wasn’t able to hold on to the lead. The Sox bats battled back in the 7th and put the home team ahead for good.  The Sox “never say die” attitude got them another win and now are 5 games up in the AL East.

The Sox got on the board first when rookie Rafael Devers hit a 2 run homer in the 2nd inning.   Sox 2-0.  Pomeranz was trucking along until the 4th innin when Farrell and the trainers came out to check on him.   He ended up leaving the game with back spasms and Brandon Workman came into the game in relief.   Workman finished off the 4th and pitched a scoreless 5th as well.   The Sox added another run in the bottom of the 5th when Christian Vazquez hit a solo home run.   Sox 3-0.

Matt Barnes came out for the 6th and that is when things started to go down hill.   Barnes gave up a 2 run homer to Frazier to have the Yankees within one.   Sox 3-2.   Kelly came out to finish off the 6th, but he’d have his own troubles in the 7th.   Kelly gave a lead off homer in the 7th to Sanchez to tie the game 3-3.  It didn’t end there though.   Hembree came into the game and gave up a 2 run RBI single to Torreyes to have the Yankees now out in front.   Hembree was out and Robby Scott came into the game to hope to stop the bleeding.   Unfortunately Scott hit Hicks with a pitch with the bases loaded to force in a run.   The game went south quickly and now the Yankees were up 6-3.  Addison Reed came in to the game and got the two outs the Sox needed to end the inning.

Fortunately, the Sox offense got right back to work in the bottom of the 7th.  The Sox scored four times in the inning to take the lead back and this time it would be for good.  Betts hit an RBI sac fly, Benintendi hit an RBI single and then Mitch Moreland came in to pinch hit and he hit a 2 run RBI single to take the lead.   Sox 7-6.   Reed came back out and pitched himself a scoreless 8th inning.  The Sox added on some insurance runs in the bottom of the 8th when Bradley Jr. hit a 2 run RBI single off of Chapman.   Sox 9-6.  Craig Kimbrel came for the 9th and struck out the side to end the game.
