Sox Score 8 Runs in the 5th to Easily Beat Cards

The Red Sox have a short two game series with the Cardinals this week.   Last night we had Rick Porcello on the mound vs. Mike Leake for the Cardinals.  The Sox got on the board first and then broke the game wide open in the 5th when they went on to score 8 times in the inning.   Porcello would end 3 runs in his 7 innings of work, but when your team scores 10 runs, it’s not an issue.

The Sox scored a single run in the bottom of the 1st when Rafael Devers hit an RBI single to score Benintendi.   Sox 1-0.  That wouldn’t end up being the highlight of Devers’ game though as he started an inning ending triple play in the 4th inning, much to the delight of Rick Porcello.   Porcello was cruising along with the 1-0 lead, but the Sox put the game away in the bottom of the 5th.  The Sox would end up scoring 8 times in the inning and put a nail in the chances for the Cards.   Hanley Ramirez hit a 2 run RBI double, Bogaerts and Moreland both hit RBI singles to chase Leake from the game, but the Sox weren’t done there.   Bowman came into the game for the Cards and Leon hit a 2 run RBI double followed by RBI singles from Bradley Jr. and Nunez.   Sox 9-0.  Porcello went out for the 6th after a long wait and ended up giving up 3 runs.   Porcello gave up a 2 run RBI double to Fowler and then an RBI single to Kelly.   Sox 9-3.

The Sox got one of those runs back in the bottom of the 6th when Bradley walked with the bases loaded to force in a run.  Sox 10-3.  Porcello pitched a scoreless 7th inning and that would close the book on his outing.  His pitching line was 106 pitches, 7 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 2 BB and 6 Ks.  Joe Kelly came out for the 8th inning and ended up giving up an RBI single to DeLong.   Sox 10-4.  Robby Scott came out for the 9th and had himself a scoreless inning to close the game out.
