Sox Walk Off in the 9th for Mini Sweep of the Cards!

Before the Sox and the Cardinals faced off last night, the Sox celebrated the 1967 Impossible Dream team.   That was the team that turned things around for the Sox, won the pennant and then ended up falling to the Cardinals in the World Series.   It was great to see many of the players from that team on the field before the game.   Then the current day Sox and Cardinals faced off.   The Sox went down early and it looked like the Cards were on their way to a win.   However the Sox put on a rally in the 9th and ended up walking off when Mookie Betts hit a game winning 2 RBI double.

The Cardinals didn’t take long in getting to Eduardo Rodriguez.   ERod ended up giving up 4 runs in the 2nd inning.  He gave up an RBI single to Wong, an RBI double to Voit, Wong ended up scoring on a passed ball and then Carpenter hit an RBI single.   Sox 0-4.  The Sox got on the board for the first time in the game in the 3rd inning when Nunez hit an RBI infield single and then Betts hit an RBI sac fly.   Sox 2-4.  Rodriguez settled down after the 2nd inning and he kept the Cardinals scoreless and pitched into the 6th inning.   ERod was pulled with one out in the 6th and Matt Barnes came into the game to finish out the inning.   Barnes struck out both of the batters he faced to close the book on ERod’s outing.   Rodriguez’s pitching line was 98 pitches, 5.1 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 1 BB and 6 Ks.   Not great, but he didn’t let that one poor outing define him.

Barnes came back out and pitched a scoreless 7th inning before handing the ball over to Addison Reed in the 8th.   Reed pitched a scoreless 8th inning and then Craig Kimbrel pitched a scoreless 9th inning to leave it all up to the Sox bats in the bottom of the 9th.  Xander Bogaerts started off the 9th with a lead off home run to cut the Cardinals lead to one.   Sox 3-4.  Fenway was suddenly alive as both Moreland and Bradley Jr. walked as well.   With two outs in the inning, Mookie Betts came to the plate and hit a walk off 2 run RBI double.  The Cardinals tried to get Jackie Bradley Jr. at the plate, but Yadier Molina couldn’t control the throw and Bradley was easily safe at home.   The Sox celebrated their 9th Walk Off victory this season and swept the Cardinals out of town!
