Curt Schilling (5-5, 6.43) @ Jose Lima (4-12,  6.47)

The Battle of the 6 ERAs is underway tonight! After this game, the longest road trip of the season (10 games) finally comes to a close and if we can win tonight, we will be 5-5 on the trip. Since the Yankees won today, it would be nice if we could win today to avoid losing the advantage we enoy over the Yankees. History says we will do so, as we are 28-12 in series enders and we’ve won 22 of our last 32 games.
A nice tidbit is that tonights game marks the last time we will be out of Eastern Time for the rest of the season, something that should play to our advantage.
Another tidbit, which I am sure you all know: This is the latest we have been in first since we won the division in 1995.
Lastly, since July 26th, when we beat Tampa Bay 10-9 in ten innings (last night was the first time any Sox game has gone past 10 innings this season) we owe the best record.
1. Red Sox at 18-7.
2. Cleveland Indians at 19-8.
3. St. Louis Cardinals at 18-11.
4. Atlanta Braves, New York Yankees, and Philadelphia Phillies at 17-11.
This game tonight is important for Curt Schilling. If he can go five scoreless, I’ll be happy. I am not expecting him to go eight innings. I also expect him to be more effective as a starter. After all, if you’ve started forever, it’s going to take a while to adjust to the closer’s role, and I’m positive Schilling hadn’t still adjusted. He only walked six batters and struck out 27 for a good K/BB rate, so I have a good feeling about this game. Time will tell…

  1. Can we have Chacon please? Schilling is not looking very well. I know it's his first start, but it's the ROYALS!! Millar sucks as always and Petagine will never play again. Boy is it frustrating to be a Red Sox fan…

  2. Disappointing start thus far but like you said Mike, it's his first start in months. Can't draw too many conclusions from just one start, that's why they decided to return him to the rotation sooner or later to see what he's got. Millar sucks huh? Well he's 1-2 with a run as opposed to 0-3 for Olerud (bad double play in 1st) and Kapler is 0-2 with the final out in the inning where we got some runs. If you want to criticize Millar's arm, go ahead, but Kapler's throw to home was even more off than Millar's. And where would you have started Petagine? Last time I checked he didn't play OF and Olerud had really good numbers against Lima going into the game so he deserved the start.

  3. Bad loss. That said you if there's one guy I wouldn't give up its Curt Schilling. Let's see how he bounces back in his next start against Tampa Bay at home. And remember- we're still 2.5 up in the AL East with the majority of our games left at home.

  4. That was disgraceful. It's like Tito penned out the lineup most likely to lose the game. No Ortiz? No Graffanino? No Petagine? Millar starting? Again? Sheesh…

  5. Well, I could understand Millar starting. Trying to build on that HR game. I'll have more on my thoughts on this game by 6 pm. I'm basically thinking along the lines of Geo, I was encouraged by this Schilling start.

I just love that no one, anywhere, could have ever predicted that by the end of the summer, Tony Graffanino's name would be on the list of 'guys who ought to be in the lineup if we're looking to win'.
Schill had a bad game, but that happens. Sure, I flipped out as much as the next Sox fan, but it's only if he puts up a string of them that we should start worrying for real.
