Lars Anderson can play left

In my interview with Peter Gammons, he mentioned the possibility of Lars Anderson playing the outfield should the Sox sign Mark Teixeira. But did Lars have outfield experience? I asked him. He says: “I played left for two years in high school but they haven’t mentioned
it…I haven’t really concerned myself with much of that talk this
offseason.”

  1. This is unrelated, but ESPN is reporting that the Sox and Pedroia have agreed on a 6-year, $40.5 million extension with a team option for 2015. Looks like a great deal to me.

  2. It makes sense that if Lars is so athletic he could play an outfield position if needed. Evan’s flexibility argument continues to shine.
Great news on Pedroia’s signing, and the money seems right. Next up, Youk, Lester, Papelbon, Bay, which should add another $25M to payroll. Plenty of room for Penny or Kawakami if Masterson stays in the Pen, a catcher, and maybe Teixeira.

  3. Good contract w/ Pedroia. As for the signing before Youk, if I recall Pedroia said previously he’s open to an extension, where as Youk thought they were too far apart last year and they should go year to year with arbitration.

  4. I think the main reason Pedroia was signed before Youk is that Pedroia’s salary would escalate a lot faster in arbitration due to the ROY, MVP, and GG.

  5. As for Pedey signing before Youk. I think the answer is simple. Who do you have more confidence in having an injury-free, consistenly productive 5-6 more years? Yeah, that’s what I thought. Of course Youk an awesome 1B now but I just don’t have confidence in him being consistent for 4-5 more years. Pedroia, on the other hand, will have to have his middle name changed to Steady by the time his new deal is done.

  6. by the way, if Lars can play LF then I’m completely on board with signing Teixiera that’s a great foundation for the lineup

  7. Sam, I can’t believe Youk is STILL not getting the respect he is due. He is healthy as a horse, will be 34 at the end of a 4 year contract, and most likely has another half dozen years of huge contributions. My bet is a 4/1 or 2 contract slightly higher than Dustin’s. His going year to year would make me nervous because of his ability to walk. Youk stays.

  8. Oh, don’t get me wrong. I don’t think anybody can possibly put a value on what Youk has done for us between 1st and 3rd over the last couple years. He has been a rock and gets all my repsect for it. But I just don’t have enough confidence in him sustaining his all out style of play into his mid 30s. If we can pay him more money for less years I’m all for it. I just think we need to be smart about how long we lock the guy in for.

  9. What if Youk continues his rise in 2009 with a .300BA, 900OPS, 30+HR, 100+RBI and GG play; and we haven’t extended him to the fair and generous contract he deserves? Won’t Theo be kicking himself because he will cost more for 2010 with a 5 year demand; because he will project at the very least to be one of the best DH in the American League for another 6-7 years? Won’t most of the fans be furious (Teix and Lars are not relevant to this discussion) if Youk walks? I know I will, and would consider this gross mismanagement.
We should have extended him last year. We should extend him this year. We might not get a chance after next year. Youk is core. Even if the start of his decline is just 3 years away, he will still be better (and more exciting) in 2012 – 2015 than most earning his kind of $$. IMO, being smart is offering a fair and generous long term contract to one of our best and healthiest players. Compare this to what injury prone AJ is demanding, or what same age Teix is demanding. Yooouuuuuk through 2016.

  10. What’s with all this non-Anderson talk. I’ll get it back on track. I think Anderson playing Left in Fenway is a great idea, not so much right. Figure he is ready by 2010, Drew’s got one year left, sign Bay long term to move to right after that season when Drew’s gone. meanwhile in 2010 Anderson gets outfield experience as a number four guy with drew playing center while bay learns right to let Anderson learn the monster. It would be a little Manny-like but hey that worked out for a little while.

  11. This will be moot if the news is true that Tek is moving on because Borass has set him up somewhere else. I suspect this will mean we are NOT getting Teix, either.
Theo should show Borass where to kiss when conversation turns to Teix and Lowe, which means Lars will play 1st base and Youk 3rd when Lars comes up in two years when Mike’s and Papi’s contracts are up, after two bash brother years at Fenway.
I wouldn’t be at all surprised if JD, JB, Mike and Papi are hitting as well as ever in 2010. Should be another good year.
    Time to sign CC, Theo.
