The NHL development camps are currently in session we’re starting to get some reports back on how they guys are doing. Former University of North Dakota forward Nick Schmaltz was close to returning to UND for his junior season.

Chris Hine, Chicago Tribune — Schmaltz thought long and hard about whether to sign with the Hawks or remain at North Dakota for another year. Trading Teravainen opened a spot on the roster for a player who fits Schmaltz’s profile: a center who is most comfortable with the puck on his stick.

“It was really tough,” said Schmaltz, who agreed to a three-year entry-level deal June 19. “I just talked with my family and there was a lot of opportunity with the Blackhawks right now with the salary cap and stuff. It’s the right time and I’m ready to be a pro.

“I was close to going back. North Dakota is a great program, great group of guys and coaching staff and I’m going to miss it, but I’m excited for the future.

In listening to some of the players this year, the majority of these guys loved their time at UND and didn’t want to leave. It’s too bad, UND could’ve gotten another season out of Schmaltz.
