The unpredictability of sports is one of the main reasons that they are so intriguing to fans. So, in the vein, The Hoops Manifesto will be tracking the biggest surprise NBA player this season – the player who (positively) deviated most from his norm and had a crazy good season. This is the NBA Eye Opener of the Year.
Tyus Jones – Minnesota Timberwolves
4.7 ppg, 1.9 rpg, 3.3 apg, 1.0 spg, 42.1% 3Pts, 1.1 WP
Nothing jumps off the page when you look at second-year pro Tyus Jones’s stats, but if you look at them Per48 compared to average point guards, you see he is having a very nice season for the Wolves. Above average in boards, assists, turnovers, steals, three point %, free throw % – he checks off all the boxes for a quality NBA player, which was in question after his subpar rookie campaign. He’s been so good that with a despite being third on the team’s depth chart at point guard, he’s still carving out a nice 15 minutes of play a night.
