All is quiet in Isles land for now. We will be doing some research on draft prospects, and come up with a short piece sometime soon. The 15th pick isn’t exactly bowl me over in a trade for a great player exciting, but it could have some value if they decide to deal it.
The question here really is how many prospects do they need? You can easily say no amount of prospects is too many, and you’re likely right. You can look at the Yankees for example. They knew they weren’t going anywhere last year, so they restocked on prospects and got a boatload of talent. The Isles already HAVE a boatload of talent.
Mathew Barzal, Parker Wotherspoon, Michael Dal Colle, Ryan Pulock, Stephon Williams, Ilya Sorokin, Kieffer Bellows, Mitchell Vande Sompel, Devon Toews, Doyle Somerby, Jesse Graham, Kyle Burrows, Linus Soderstrom.
It’s early in the baseball season, but if the Isles’ prospects can perform like the Yankees’ prospects have , the Isles could be in for something special.
Of course we must keep in mind too that not every single guy will pan out, and some may get dealt. There are three goalies on this list. One or two at most make it, and only one can start at a time. At some point, it becomes survival of the fittest. A few of these guys will have to go if the Islanders want an established guy like Matt Duchene.
Who is going to step up and be the next guy to have his name next to John Tavares‘ when it comes to Islanders’ hockey stars?
We will soon find out d if the Isles will trade the pick, or if they will select another young talented forward to join the group. A name to keep an eye on is Owen Tippett, a 6’2″, 200 lb winger from the Mississauga Steelheads of the OHL. He has a sniper’s shot, and could be the steal of the draft if he somehow falls to the Islanders. He has been projected to go as high as top 10 or even top three. He has been compared to Phil Kessel and Matt Duchene. It’s possible, due to him being a couple of years away (he is only 18), he could possibly fall to the Isles at 15. This is not a very deep draft, so if the Isles see him available they may be wise to trade up a couple of spots to snag him. He could be that good of a talent.
The NHL Entry Draft begins in just 51 days.
