The Prelim Breakout Star is a once per event article that helps fans get to know those who will be entertaining them from the undercard. The intention of the article is not to bring attention to the most talented guy on the preliminary card, but rather one that the common fan may have overlooked or underestimated.
Last week’s Prelim Breakout Star was one of the perfect examples of an expert in a discipline getting away from his roots. In the UFC it is easy to get comfortable with a new martial art when you’re having success with it. However, there are not always great results. You don’t have to worry about this week’s star sticking with his base; he loves it.

What makes him impressive
He is perfect on takedowns. Okay, perhaps that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but in his UFC career he has yet to miss on a takedown. That includes a perfect six for six against Chris Cariaso, a man who stopped nine of 10 against Louis Smolka and stops over half of the attempts. This could easily be attributed to his Olympic wrestling career in which he took home the gold medal in Beijing. However, it really should be seen as a testament to how well he has transferred that into his MMA game.
Why he has been overlooked
The flyweight division has plenty of contenders coming down the pike for kingpin, “Might Mouse” Johnson. Still, the division has had a bit of trouble gaining the publicity that it truly deserves. As a result, the common fan can’t name a handful of UFC flyweights. Although, if Cejudo keeps winning, he’ll be on the top of one of these cards one day.
What makes this a good matchup
When Chico Camus squared off with Chris Holdsworth, it was clear what Holdsworth had planned. He wanted to take him down and dominate from top game. And that is exactly what he did, scoring four of the six shots that he took. Camus will know again that his opponent just wants to drag him down. No matter the preparation that he does, the level of wrestling will be higher, making him fight off of his back all night.
