The Prelim Breakout Star is a once per event article that helps fans get to know those who will be entertaining them from the undercard. The intention of the article is not to bring attention to the most talented guy on the preliminary card, but rather one that the common fan may have overlooked or underestimated.

With the sheer number of prelim fighters we’ve covered, it’s getting hard to find ones that have a lot of experience. However, not only does our fighter this weekend have a lot of experience in the UFC, but he has a lot of success as well. The fact that this guy is on the prelims speaks to how loaded this card is.

Beneil Dariush

Affiliation – King’s MMA
From – Yorba Linda, California
Height – 5’10”
Weight – 155 lbs (Lightweight)
Record – 10-1 (4-1 UFC)

What makes him impressive

Dariush is an absolute stud on the ground. He’s won or placed at both World’s and Pan-Ams in both the purple and brown belt divisions. According to his own claim, he’s been in over fifty tournaments and never placed lower than third in one of them. In addition, he received his black belt from Romulo Barral. But his jiu jitsu game is just the beginning. His sheer size, mixed with a tricky stand up game, helps him keep the fight where he likes it.

Why he has been overlooked

Dariush made his debut on very short notice, taking on Charlie Brenneman. Despite the very low odds on him, he made it look easy and built up a ton of momentum. Then, that momentum was squashed by a Ramsey Nijem KO. While he’s won three straight since then, he is just getting back to where that hype train was boarding passengers.

What makes this a good matchup

Jim Miller is a beast on the ground. He’s got amazing jiu jitsu in his own right and is a tough out on the ground for anybody. However, Dariush’s size is going to give him trouble. Dariush is loads stronger and will likely be working on top for a large portion of the fight. Although Miller has caught plenty of people from his back, Dariush is not just any grappler. He’s one of the most legitimate grapplers that Miller has ever faced. If he winds up on his back this time, it is going to spell trouble.
