UFC Fight Night Prelim Breakout Star: Makwan Amirkhani

-82

The Prelim Breakout Star is a once per event article that helps fans get to know those who will be entertaining them from the undercard. The intention of the article is not to bring attention to the most talented guy on the preliminary card, but rather one that the common fan may have overlooked or underestimated.

It’s officially the 100th installment of Prelim Breakout Star! It’s a big moment for the column and I would like to thank Jeff Fox, the owner of this site, for having me write for him for all 100 of these. Please stay tuned this week coming up for our 100th anniversary article in which we detail our best and worst choices. Let’s hope this weeks ends up in the former column.

Makwan Amirkhani

Nickname – Mr. Finland
Affiliation – Turku Muay Thai
From – Turku, Finland
Height – 5’11”
Weight – 145 lbs (Featherweight)
Record – 11-2 (1-0 UFC)

What makes him impressive

Many watched as Mr. Finland sprinted across the cage and hit a flying knee for an eight second knockout at UFC on Fox: Gustafsson vs Johnson in January. The subsequent interview and press conference made him an instant fan favorite. However, his mic skills and knockout power are actually the least impressive things about Amirkhani. A Finnish champion in Greco-Roman wrestling, he uses his skills in the discipline to get the fight to the floor; and that’s where the magic happens. Mr. Finland is bold on the mat. He’s willing to go for submissions from anywhere, which is exactly why he has eight first round submissions in his 11 career wins.

Why he has been overlooked

The knockout of Andy Ogle was impressive. When he proclaimed his love for Joe Rogan and Fear Factor, it was funny. But still, that was only his first UFC fight. Additionally, he’s still never fought on U.S. soil or even off of the Scandinavian peninsula. Berlin is a little ways away, but it will help him build up that international fan base.

What makes this a good matchup

Masio Fullen lists himself as a boxer. While he is a good one, with some real submission skills, he is susceptible to the takedown. Twice in his last fight he got ripped to the ground and his previous opponent, Alex Torres, had nowhere near the wrestling credentials as Amirkhani has. Not to mention, if Amirkhani gets him down early, it will be a short night for Fullen.
