Guest Blogger #27: NY Rangers Hockey…from a Girlfriend’s Perspective

Kevin’s Note: Ok this is getting ridiculous with all the guest blogs I missed. I think hope this is the last one. Again, I will pick a winner by the end of the week.

I am the girlfriend of a “slightly” obsessed NY Rangers fan. By “slightly” I mean very…but I was warned.

Over a year ago, I started to date my now boyfriend. He told me about his love of the Rangers and how crazy he gets during the hockey season. So did his family and friends, but I guess it was something that I had to see for myself to truly realize what I got myself into.

I had never watched NHL hockey before, however, due to my love of the “Mighty Ducks” movies (and Gordon Bombay), I always had a secret love of the game.

“It ain’t worth winning if you don’t win big” – Coach Riley

This quote is one of my favorites from the movie series, and when I saw this same quote on my boyfriend’s Facebook page, I knew it was something special. I have come to see that this quote is not necessarily true when it comes to the Rangers. Rangers fans just want to win, they don’t care how big of a win it is, as long as the Rangers get those 2 points. Winning big would be the cherry on top.

Maybe my viewpoint is a little skewed as my boyfriend has a love/hate relationship with his beloved Rangers. Players come and go, and he is as fickle as the next play, but the Rangers as a team will always be his # 1 (I think I am a close second). He will not wear a jersey with any player’s name or number on the back, because the true meaning of being a fan, is to support the team as a whole. It’s not about what is on the back of the jersey, but rather what is on the front. The New York Rangers, red, white, and blue. As he says, being a Rangers fan is like being in a bad relationship. Your wife cheats on you, yet you can’t seem to divorce her, because you love her so much, you think things will get better. The Rangers are the bad wives, they disappoint, only to then win a few games to gain your trust and devotion back, only to crush you again by losing in the playoffs.

I don’t think a day has gone by where I do not hear some talk about the Rangers, and I have now accepted his passion. I love going to home games with him, especially when the Rangers win in a shootout, and seeing Fedotenko is always a nice treat. We eat dinner early, so that we are home in time for the puck to drop. I stopped wearing my Rangers shirt, as I have become a so-called jinx. I no longer update him on NHL scores from my Blackberry, as I have also become a jinx. I even bought him a NYR toaster – true love.

The Rangers have now become a part of my life, as Michael Kors has become a part of his (much to his dispair). I would love to see him watch the Rangers win a Stanley Cup game, and see his dream come true. I can only hope that one day we will both get to see the Rangers’ captain raise the cup in celebration.

In the meantime, I plan to beat him in his Fantasy Hockey league, which he finally let me join (after a lot of begging on my part).
