Post Game Cocktail Hard Core Drug Recommendation

I’ll let my good friend Steve McCroskey take this one…

Gif of the Game

Us too JT, us too.

No Killer Instinct

One glaring negative throughout this amazing run of playoff appearances for the Rangers has been their difficulty closing out games. Even when they do hold on, it’s usually because Lundqvist had to stand on his head.

Whether it was Drury’s goal with 7.7 seconds remaining…

Blowing two, two-goal leads in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final to the Kings…

Or Game 2 of the previous series against Montreal when Plekanic tied it with 17 seconds remaining…

…the Rangers have lacked that killer instinct. And this isn’t exclusive to just AV as both Renney and Tortorella coached the same way. Sit back and hope Hank can hold on. While more often than not, the Rangers All World netminder is able to seal the deal, unfortunately, taking their foot off the gas has left the Blueshirts vulnerable to these horrific collapses. Not sure there’s a team in the league that craps their pants when down 6-on-5 more than the Rangers.

We just have to hope this is the straw that broke the camel’s back because when the Rangers have an opponent down, they need to start stepping on their throat.

Hank Can’t Always Be Hank

Lundqvist was 100% guilty, tonight. That’s right, 100% guilty of not being Hank. Unfortunately, when that happens his teammates are exposed for what they really are: a very flawed ice hockey team.

You see, Craig Anderson forgot how to goalie for half of Game 2, but his teammates were able to put him on their shoulders and carry him to victory. Ask yourself this Rangers fans, when was the last time the Blueshirts carried Lundqvist?

Sure, they gave him five goals tonight, but they also gave him brutal defense, awful coaching and zero offensive zone pressure during the final five minutes of the game.

This isn’t meant to excuse Lundqvist, because he needed to be better tonight, but if he’s not perfect in the postseason the Rangers don’t win.

Skjei What?!?!?

Alain Vigneault decided to play Nick Holden six minutes more than the defenseman who did this tonight…

You have to wonder how many times Holden and Staal are going to have to fail in the clutch before Skjei and Smith (didn’t get a shift in the final five minutes of regulation) succeed them as the second pairing.

No Luck Nash

I know Nash has finally been producing in the postseason, but is there a play that exemplifies his Rangers playoff experience more than this…

Ok maybe this…

Mini Recap

A horrific Girardi giveaway and blowing a two goal lead? What is this the 2014 Stanley Cup Final?

Good God that game was sloppy. On both sides. Penalties, turnovers, odd man rushes, inopportune icings. It had it all. It was a wild ride that would have made Mr. Toad jealous.

As I sat here and wondered how the Rangers are down 0-2 to a far inferior team, it dawned on me that maybe I’m not giving the Senators the credit they deserve. Can this be their game plan and the Rangers are falling prey to it? Could it be that while the Rangers are pointing the gun at their own foot, it’s the Senators who are pulling the trigger? The Senators are known for sitting back and being opportunistic and that’s pretty much how this series has played out.

Got to assume Tanner Glass replaces Buchnevich in Game 3 as the Russian rookie was completely invisible during the third period and overtime…

Listen, I get that AV is trying to get his horses on the ice in overtime as much as possible, but one of the Rangers advantages in this series is their depth, so by shortening the bench the Blueshirts head coach basically chopped off one of his own legs. Not the greatest night behind the bench for the head coach.

Interesting to see the Rangers offensive strategy going into Game 2 was to rely on their penalty kill for offense. Amazingly, they almost pulled it off.

Wasn’t all negative as Kreider and Stepan finally found the back of the net, while JT Miller was much more active. Also, Grabner’s been fairly dominant through two games as Ottawa hasn’t been able to handle his speed.

I was happy to see a little of the Rangers snarl return tonight as they went after Karlsson hard in an attempt to knock him off his game.

It was also nice to see all the traffic in front of Anderson as they took away his eyes on three of the five goals. Need more of that.

Maybe I’m just being naive, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the Rangers are able to get this series to MSG for a Game 6.

  1. Yeah, I don’t know which was worse, the coaching or the sloppiness of the players. Besides Kreider actually looking dominant at times and Step finally getting a nice goal which are pluses my favorite play of the day was how Fast on that 2 on 1 faked the shot to open the passing lane to feed Grabner. That was masterful. But anyway I don’t know what it’s going to take to get Skjei/Smith more minutes. Our coach is one stubborn mule. When we’re playing our game we’re obviously the better team so if we lose we beat ourselves. And as for killer instinct, or lack there if I’ve been saying the same for years. UGH

    1. Coach Dumbass never seems to have a problem out doing his own stupidity. Coach continues to make the same poor decisions year after year but somehow gets rewarded with a contract extension instead of the exit door. Someone get the man glasses and a brain. Stupidity is repeating the same things and expecting different results.

      1. On shortening the bench and depth, “we felt that at the time there were a couple of guys who were playing pretty good and thought it was the right thing to do.”
Problem is this guy can’t see the trees in a forest. He can’t even recognize who is playing well and who is not.

      2. Vesey was on fire, the Smith-Skjei pairing were looking good and Skjei scored twice. Like how do you not play these guys? Shortening the bench is a bad strategy unless you win fast. By the end of the 1st OT Ottawa had the jump On us as we started looking slow and tired. . It was only a matter of time. It appears to me AV is a fear based thinker. Won’t take chances with the rookies so if he loses he won’t look as bad to the press. You never get anywhere without taking appropriate risks. He seemed to though when we went down 2-1 to Montreal. Why this coach and this team will only give their best when backed up against a wall escapes me.

  2. I said it the other day – what happens when Hank crashes to earth? Got my answer yesterday. What in holy hell were they doing the last 5 minutes of the 3rd? Icing after icing, no boxing out or clearing the front of the net, and horrible coaching by AV (and I am not an AV basher, but last night looked like he was trying to lose). Hank was overdue for a tough game and this one was a stinker. He was clearly out of sync and his “defense” did him no favors. There were some unlucky bounces – that 3rd goal comes to mind. With all of that they still should have won. So here we go to MSG. Let’s hope Hank remembers how to goalie, the offense stays potent, AV wakes up, and our D actually plays some defense. LGR!

    1. What happens when your D takes a day off and your 35 year old goalie gets pummeled with over 40 shots, many of them grade AA the game prior. Ottawa was terrible and ripe for the picking last game

  3. I still can’t figure out how Skjei and Smith got benched in the last 5 minutes of regulation. Those two have been the best d pair the whole playoffs and AV chooses to go with Holden and Staal instead. Holden and Staal poor defensive play was one of the reasons why Ottawa was able to get back into not only this game, but against Montreal too. It’s time for AV to make some changes Holden should be sat I’d bring in Klein this is the second time that d pair cost us a playoff game

  4. Another one for the annals. Yesterday was the fourth time in the AV era that the Rangers blew a two goal lead to lose in OT. Twice in the 2014 final, once to TB in the ECF in 2015, and now yesterday. Ugh.

  5. Ugh, I still have visions of Hayes with a grade A chance shooter ng right into the goalies stomach, and Nash’s open net stymied by the defense. Yesterday’s game gave me PTSD…. time for 3rd star. 😳

  6. Hey maybe they should a played Clendenon..
Most critical i have read here of A V ..usual practice when big losses occur
gotta say big loss ,even bigger comeback coming
Otts were worried about getting swept WELL howbout 4 straight NOW
getting to Sat tied at 2 will set stage for the return of the debacle site w/3 minute sleft….We will beat them like a drum next 4…..
teams comeback from the abyss & when they do its over..they steamroll thru
when u beat a team for much of the game yet keep shooting yourself in the foot
you tend to grind even harder … WE WILL
how u can back seat drive the way he used his team is sad… why would you sit
Shey & Smith? weak play ? what were they going to just snap to it?
BUchny ? how bout MIller …what is he trying to do out there is a mystery?
we will come out Hard & fast like we did last game with resullts ..
Hank aint having 2 gms in arow like that ..how many puck luck deflects have gone in NOW..law of averages will start to apply
L G R ..get your tkts for Tues gm 6 closer at Garden week form tomorrow …
    YOu heard it here…L G R

  7. 1. The NYR really put their fans to the test. I’m all for throwing AV under the bus, being overly critical of hank etc, but at the end of the day, the players need to play. As others have said, Nash held out of an open goal chance by a timely defender’s stick, JT putting his shot right into Anderson’s glove (I’d kill for my youth softball team to have that kind of accuracy), Hayes into his gut, the failure to hold a two goal lead … the guys on the ice, no matter who they are, have to make plays. I don’t give two stress induced watery shits who’s on the bench, who’s on the 1st, 2nd or 3rd pairs, the guys with sticks in hand and skates on ice have to fucking GET IT DONE.

    2. Ottawa somehow has come back from being down goals to tie and win each game. They get it. Let’s take a moment to tip a cap to the opposition who hasn’t given up in either game while we’re rightfully aggravated with our team from top to bottom. As much as we’re doing our best to beat ourselves, Ottawa is earning the wins they’ve attained so far by continuing to play opportunistic hockey. Ask the Bruins how well sitting on a lead works out against them.

    3. Skjei was rather Leetch-like this game, yet gets his ass nailed to the bench because “play time is based on performance” or something similar from the master of Canadian maths. Buch has one turnover, that did not result in a goal, and spends the third period contemplating his speaker inventory for next weeks imminent playoff exit.

    4. Still want to keep Girardi, or is he back on the buyout list? Like a porno rookie, he shot his load a bit early this playoff run. Oh it was one hell of a load, but now he needs to rest and build it back up, but the movie is not quite over yet. Guess he’ll limp through to the end, like the warrior he is. If we’re being honest though, as bad a turnover as it was, Hank needs to make that stop.

    5. Vesey. Did anyone really expect the kid to be this good, or more importantly imo, mature and cool under pressure with the puck? I mean I’ve seen him play around a dozen games over his college career (my son played football for a university with an ECAC hockey team and he was a part time phys trainer for them once football season was over) so I knew he had ability, but college to pro isn’t always as smooth as its been for the lad. Once he got his second wind in last third of the reg season, he’s been excellent at both ends of the ice.

    6. Lindberg. Back to pre-injury form and quite possibly the best center overall, 2nd best at worst. So bench him for the 3rd period and both OTs.

    7. Why can’t this coach accept and embrace the youth that the team has? All he needs to do is take a look a borough over and see the Yankees relying 100% on its youth, and it’s paying dividends. No Yankee fan expects to get into the playoffs, but there is a buzz around that team right now. I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again, youth learns by doing, by both succeeding and failing. Not by watching. Inserting Buch into the lineup made the four lines all viable, dangerous lines. Glass is an albatross. Nice guy, shitty AHL hockey player.

    8. Glass, Pirri, Puempel sure as hell better keep scuking down smoothies in Manhattan rather than lacing up skates.

  8. Rangers entered playoffs looking like a team that really wanted to win the Cup or really wanting to beat Montreal. Looks like it was the latter. Not the same compete level this series. I guess there is less cache in beating Ottowa. I’m expecting that they will up that level with their backs against the wall. The question is, did they wait too long?

  9. Crosby Hurt, maybe a concussion. As much as I dislike him and his team he’s one hell of a player who seems like he finally has grown up some under Sully. That blows

  10. Cyndy Lou: those who go by the cheap shot I’ll do anything to win type guys
GO Down by the cheap shot by just trying to win at all costs plays….

  11. Ok, so the superglue has worn off, the sake cabinet is empty and I am having flashbacks from turning off the computer with 5 min to go in the 2nd game. Was around 5am Tokyo time. But nothing was gonna happen in those 5 min, right? Woke up, had lunch, logged on to this page, saw the result …. Got the glue and the sake….. Just coming to terms with this now. It really happened!!
    F’k me…. it really did.
