Did the Dolphins make popular moves today?

Twitter reactions seems to have hit a sore spot with fans after Dolphins beat writers spoke with GM Dennis Hickey.

The Dolphins have announced they have released popular deep threat Damian Williams and not so popular for his Michael Sam comments safety Don Jones.

Signed by the Dolphins today were safety Brandian Ross (formerly of the Packers practice squad in the past) and cornerback Sammy Seamster.  In addition, the Dolphins have added to their practice squad by bringing in former UM standout, wide receiver Tommy Streeter.

First, the Dolphins have released Williams because they feel they are already deep at receiver.  Both Ross and Seamster can fill in right away on special teams an area that the Dolphins needed to improve given their cuts yesterday.

Next, while the Dolphins now have 5 wide receivers, the Twitter reaction after the team releasing Damian Williams has been all but pleasant.  Several fans and bloggers felt that Damian Williams would be a welcome addition to the team’s corps of wide receivers and spell say Mike Wallace in case of injury or wear and tear after running several deep routes.  Williams is a guy that can stretch the field.

However, the reality is, was Williams going to be able to get/stay active behind 5 strong receivers?

On the other side of the coin, we also see the Dolphins looking for depth in the return game.  Would Williams have played special teams and help their return game.  Obviously, GM Dennis Hickey felt differently.  Obviously the Dolphins felt that both Orleans Darkwa and Damien Williams (running back) could help with the return game.  Let’s not forget, that the Dolphins did pickup Tommy Streeter who is a possession type of receiver.

While it can be tough to keep things in perspective, the Miami Dolphins have their 53.  How many times it will change will all depend on the success of this Dolphins team.
