Gasol and Spain Headed to Eurobasket Semi-Finals; Bertans and Latvia Eliminated by Slovenia

San Antonio Spurs center Pau Gasol and his home country of Spain are headed to the Eurobasket Semi-Finals after Spain knocked Atlanta Hawks point guard Dennis Schroder and Germany out of the tournament Tuesday 84-72.

Espana was led by Gasol’s younger brother Marc, who finished with 28 points and 10 rebounds for Spain. Pau added 19 points, four rebounds and two assists in his 28 minutes to help the Spanish erase an early deficit in the first half. Schroder finished with 27 points and eight assists for Germany, while Boston Celtics newcomer Daniel Theis added 15 points and four rebounds for Germany.

Gasol and Spain will now play Slovenia Thursday at 1:30 PM CST for the chance to earn a spot in either the Gold or Bronze Medal game.

Gasol will be the last Spur playing in Eurobasket after Davis Bertans and Latvia were eliminated by Slovenia Tuesday. Despite getting a combined 57 points from two of their NBA players in New York Knicks forward Kristaps Porzingis (34 points, 6 rebounds) and Davis (23 points, 3 assists), the duo of 18-year old Phenom Luka Doncic (27 points, 9 rebounds) and Miami Heat guard Goran Dragic (26 points, 8 assists, 6 rebounds) were too much for Latvia, as Slovenia won the matchup 103-97.

Two Eurobasket titans will collide Thursday when both undefeated Spain and undefeated Slovenia square off against each other in the Semi-Finals matchup.
