Davonte Shannon, The Redskins’ Hidden Gem

Davonte ShannonYou likely never heard of him unless you were a fan of the woeful University of Buffalo Bulls football team (2-10 in 2010). Bulls strong safety Davonte Shannon was all-world on Buffalo’s defense. Heck, he WAS the Buffalo defense leading his team with 97 tackles, 8.5 for a loss, while earning All-MAC First Team honors for the third straight year.

Alas, Shannon tweaked his hamstring during his Pro Day March 10 and again on his make-up day March 24. With that, he dropped from sight as a rookie prospect, that whole lockout thing.

The Washington Redskins signed UDFA Shannon to the roster August 1 seemingly as just a guy to fill out practice.

But Shannon’s got fan(s) and we heard from one of them in a comment to a story early this week.

Worldwidewalter insists that Shannon will dominate when given a chance. Asked to elaborate, WWWalter says “He’s a physical, smart , playmaker sideline to sideline in college he was 1st Team All MAC 4x 461 career tackles UB record. 261 solo also UB record. If u watch the film he’s all over the place he’s 6 2″ 210 41 1/2 with a chip on his shoulder. Should have been a 1st rd pick.”

First Round? Really? NFL Draft Scout, my go-to site on these matters, barely profiled Shannon. But before we poo-poo the MAC, bear in mind that Ben Roethlisberger and Randy Moss are MAC grads (when Marshall was a MAC member). So was Shaun Suisam. Um, maybe I weakened my case with that one.

Shannon is in camp and on the Redskins roster. Just for the enthusiasm of Worldwidewalter, who may be his agent or father or something, I thought Shannon deserved a Google-able post.

I’m glad to oblige.

Point after: The media guide for Friday’s Redskins-Steelers preseason game lists Shannon as third on the depth chart at free safety. OJ Atogwe and Anderson Russell are ahead of him. Kareem Moore is on the PUP list. Shannon wears jersey No. 36.
