Farewell, London Fletcher, and thank you and good bye

Redskins ILB London Fletcher

It is time to go anyway.

I don't know what the one percent chance might be that would persuade London Fletcher to remain an active player. I don't see any team signing the 38-year-old to a new deal.

Most of us are too polite to say it, but the decline of the Redskins defense paces the decline in Fletcher's performance. It is a bigger factor than what's going on at quarterback. Fletcher is the lowest-ranked ILB in Pro Football Focus' list.

Washington cannot rebuild the defense around him. Fletcher's roster spot is too valuable to hold for him as Mike Shanahan did this year.

London Fletcher was the best free agent signing of the Gibbs II era. I liked that the Redskins gave him a smooth glide path to exit, but exit he must.

Fletch is leaving as he has done with everything else, with grace and class and dignity.
