The Arena Football League Continues To Build, Adds Baltimore Franchise

The football league you know and love just got a little bit bigger. The Arena Football League will have a fifth team next season, according to multiple sources. This un-named team will play its home games at the Royal Farms Arena in Baltimore, Maryland. Before this announcement, the only four teams remaining in the AFL were the Cleveland Gladiators, Tampa Bay Storm, Washington Valor, and your Philadelphia Soul.

The new team, which is still conducting a search for its first head coach, is owned by Monumental Sports and Entertainment, which currently owns the NBA’s Washington Wizards, the NHL’s Washington Capitals, the WNBA’s Washington Mystics, and the AFL’s Washington Valor (in addition to having its hand in ESports as well). All involved with this addition are very excited about the rebound the AFL is currently on after losing four teams this past offseason, including the millions of fans. According to a fan-voted poll on arenafootball.com, 31.2 percent of fans believe that the city-owned Royal Farms Arena will “have the best home-field advantage in 2017”, followed by 25 percent vote for the Soul’s own Wells Fargo Center.

According to their website, Royal Farms Arena was the Highest Grossing Venue in North America last year, out of venues with a capacity of 10,001-15,000 people, and has been in the top 3 in that category six out of the last seven years. So, while a roster and staff still need to be assembled, this team will certainly not be starting from scratch. The Arena Football League is entering a historic milestone year in 2017, with the upcoming season being the 30th in the league’s history. The AFL has proven that its brand of fun-filled and action packed football will continue to stand the test of time. After a dispersal draft sent star players from former teams like the Jacksonville Sharks and Portland Steel (the Philadelphia Soul acquired Steel franchise record holder for rushing touchdowns John Martinez with the final pick of the first round), the teams are more talented and ready to entertain countless fans across the nation, and the globe. No other full professional indoor/arena football league in the United States has been playing for more than a decade, and with the addition of another excellent team, the AFL shows no signs of stopping!
