oakland Raiders WR Chaz Schilens has a setback

Chaz Schilens was the Raiders only major camp injury for 2009, and that foot injury originally suffered nearly a year ago is bothering him again.

Chaz was escorted off the field during Thrusday’s afternoon practice and there was no information available from the organization at the time. He watched Friday’s morning practice from the sideline, and in the post practice press conference Tom Cable said that there was no new damage, but there was lingering soreness.

This foot injury cost Schilens the first half of the 2009 season, and slowed him during the second half of the season in which he played. He underwent a surgical procedure over the offseason to correct the problem, and the soress from that kep him out of minicamp and all but the last Organized Team Activities. His return for OTAs was considered a positive at the time becuase he wasn’t expected back until training camp. However, he pronounced himself ready and got work in in June.

Cable said that Schilens’s situation will be “monitored” and his practice time will be “limited.” He is expected to be a key to the Raiders passing game, and if this problem lingers towards the season, it is going to be a setback for the offense as a whole. It is also a situation that could ultimately become a threat to the team’s confidence in him to fulfill his potential. He won the starting job late in his rookie year after being a seventh round pick in 2008. He missed time in 08 with injuries, and then missed half of 09 with the foot injury. A third year of injury could turn the view on him from “promising” to “injury prone.”
